SUMMARY: While working to sway the pirates of Estwatch from their alliance with Tevinter, agents of the Qun and a plot to weaken Tevene defenses along the northern coastline were uncovered.

REPORT:
9:50, DRAKONIS—

Attached personnel dispatched to Estwatch with the intention of discouraging pirate collaboration with Tevene forces in the region. Upon arrival, we discovered the island in a state of some confusion, a disagreement having broken between certain notable crews over whether allying with Tevinter wouldn't ultimately threaten their security when facing the combined forced Hercinian pirate hunters, Orlesian navy, et cetera.

Members of Riftwatch sought to shift sympathies in the direction of those crews in support of breaking with Tevinter. Presently unsuccessful in seeing the matter on Estwatch entirely settled, in part due to the discovery of a Qun agent operating on the island searching to do the same. I suspect so long as we lay no heavier hand in the matter, the island will settle its own business and we will have won ourselves some allies and points by which to gather intelligence on Tevene naval movements and interests in the region.

Concerning the Qun agent, arguably of more immediate concern: it would seem they sought to break the Tevene-Pirate relationship here in the Waking Sea in order to force the shift of further Tevinter powers from the protection of the northern coast to managing the war here. Without the assistance of the southern pirates, Tevinter would almost certainly be required to commit additional ships and men ordinarily working in defense of the Imperium from Par Vollen elsewhere.

Notable papers intercepted from this agent have been recovered, and will be filed alongside this report. I would be unsurprised to shortly see an increase in hostilities in Seheron, and thereafter some organized movement on the Imperium directly. It would be a mistake to take Fade-touched dreams as visions of reality, but should Par Vollen really be intending to make a decisive move against Tevinter then there may be some tactical credence to the possibility that they would first set their sights on taking likes of Ventus or Carastes.

J. Flint

NEXT STEPS: Continue to work with anti-Tevene pirates. Do something about the Qun gaining a foothold.

NOTES: The time travel plot thickens...

Hello, [says a nervous little voice, with a small “really?” in the background, heralding what is to be a truly normal crystal message.]

This message is for the people who are en route to Granitefell: please stop. Now. [It is hard to strike a balance between calm and firm, here.] Or slow down. The orders have changed.

[Or: are currently changing? Will change? Gela glances helplessly at Mobius and Benedict in turn, and the meaning could not be more clear: one of you say something more convincing.]

Uh, [Benedict helpfully interjects.]

The orders are going to change as soon as possible because if you keep going the way you are, you’re gonna get attacked. [Very helpful, Mobius, that’s going to convince everyone. He tries to stay even, but there’s clearly an anxious strain in his voice.] A damned familiar team of dracolisks are on the way to intercept you there, and it’s not gonna be pretty if you end up having to fight them. [His turn to look at everyone. He can’t just rightly say we know this because future. Right? That would probably be bad.]

Timing’s gonna be pretty critical on this one.

That means you have to do it now.

Please.
[Don't ask questions bye]

Begging a moment of the company's time—

[ Here, a rustling of pages. The hollow thunk of a cup, shifted from one side of the desk to the other. ]

I've been in correspondence with a number of producers and agents and the like these past months seeking a partner in the theater who might assist us in immortalizing the events at Starkhaven, lest the sacrifices made there fall out of public view.

[ A chair creaks. A second set of pages rustles into quiet. ]

After much back and forth, I think we've hit upon the most promising individual with whom we might partner with. If the name Jacopo Sghenini means anything to anyone.

[ Slight pause for the peanut gallery ]

We've a number of things to consider, but the elements that strike me as most important would be the question of our audience, no? A play aiming to entice merchants and farmers is not the same as a play hoping to attract nobility, or sway the king.

Our new partner goes on to list a pack of questions as to the other elements of the production, but if we haggle over each of them we'll be here for the next year.

[ As if that's ever stopped Riftwatch before, and yet. ]

What, you don't think we should arbitrate whether the dragon effects are a worthy investment?

[Apparently the aforementioned peanut gallery is at least partly in residence; Flint's smart remark is only slightly muffled by the distance it has to travel to reach John's crystal.]

( at a similar volume, which largely misses the sound that petrana had made in the first place: ) It strikes me as excessive. But I suppose that artists know their art.

Artists, perhaps. But the decision has been left up to us, for better or for worse. [ A further rustle of paper, as John continues: ] Much like the choice as to whether or not we care to see it done as a musical, or whether we wish "a little comedy scene about Corypheus and the Black Divine" during intermission or to write in a romance between Sebastian and Fiona.

[ Briskly moving on from this, perhaps before the peanut gallery at hand can chime in: ]

The choice is ours, so I'll hear the arguments for or against the attached bullets. See your books, when you've a moment, if you're curious as to the other options for our production.

[ ooc / As promised, the entirety of Jacopo's letter for anyone who wants to really contemplate this artistic vision. Feel free to debate any other aspect mentioned in the letter, the world is your oyster, folks. ]

So,

[ very casual, for that one beat. ]

I'm not sure how things are done around here per rifter vanishments. Ceremonially speaking. Thus far it's sort of been a bit of hearsay, a few raised glasses. Somewhere between a resignation and a sudden death, on the spectrum of our understanding. I imagine it depends on your sense of cosmology.

[ That's enough stalling. ]

Richard Dickerson is gone, I think. The Head Healer. So we'll be short a few miracles going forwards.

Anyway,

[ does sound like the start of more talking, but it ends there. ]

Hey, guys. It's Ellie. Uh, acting Griffon keeper for the next couple of months. And since we've got a lot of new people joining, I was thinking- it might be intimidating to just go up to the Aerie and introduce yourself to the griffons alone.

They're mostly just big babies, but I know they don't look like it.

[Also, said babies can take off an arm if they feel like, but details.]

Riftwatch has some griffon riders who take good care of them, but they have favorite people they bond with and a lot of them don't have anybody special.

So if you want to come up and meet them, let me know and I'll introduce you. And if anybody's interested in learning to ride -- griffons or horses, or whatever else is in the stables, I can teach you that too.

[ooc; Griffon riding is an AC Reward that can be purchased here until the system is updated! It can be done without threading with Ellie or anyone else about it, but if you want to thread it out heyo]

SUMMARY: In the course of retrieving the elusive Mother Natela from her small rural Chantry, our heroes were ambushed by Imperial soldiers and Venatori. Though they were held hostage for a small stretch of time, they managed to cleverly escape along with some interesting correspondence grabbed at the last minute before they hit the road.

REPORT:
To be noted—

Madame de Cedoux and I were successful in persuading Mother Natela to make the journey into Kirkwall. We believe she has left word for those who would seek her to journey into Kirkwall, and the care of her former patients has been left in capable hands. I would think that in the interim we may make some introductions for her to a clinic within the city, so she may occupy herself while we await word of a second Conclave.

On the road, we met with a minor inconvenience in the form of Imperial soldiers. While we were very briefly captive, we had some luck in their underestimation of our capability. With some clever work from Madame de Cedoux, we were able to take advantage of distraction and acquire a horse upon which we fled.

A handful of papers were recovered, and given over upon our return to be assessed for any relevant information.

The horse seems of fine stock, and will be a worthwhile addition to the stables.

— JS
NEXT STEPS: Make Mother Natela comfortable in her new digs. Chase up leads from Venatori correspondence.

NOTES & LINKS: While the report will appear as written above, John gave the recovered letters directly to Flint for examination, which discussed the task of "taking a group all the way to Photious" with some consolation from the letter-writer's partner that he should be glad he "wasn't the one who had to take them the rest of the way to the Island."

SUMMARY: Teams dispatched across Thedas to handle various mage-related assignments in the wake of the Conclave attempt, such as making contact with Rivaini communities and isolationist mages, arranging patrons for mage-sympathetic authors, mediate conflict in Marcher villages, and assist in raiding Venatori supply lines.

REPORT:Commander,

I've a summary for you of the progress made on the month's work.

Bastien and Edgard contacted Madame Cordier and were able to persuade her and her daughters to take on the project of publishing Serrah Tinel's work. He can expect distribution to go ahead in the coming year, and I assume we can expect his cooperation on all matters related to the Hercinia harbor.

Enchanter Rowntree, Ellie and Warden Ellis reported trouble in their work alongside Inquisition forces. A disagreement over what should be done with a large amount of tainted lyrium discovered during their raids ended with Warden Ellis forcing their commanding officer, Livia Glas, to relinquish the goods by claiming them for the Grey Wardens.

We can expect that this argument will be reported back to the Inquisition. Though the lyrium itself was destroyed, a sample was kept for testing by our people. A second sample is on hand if the Inquisition inquires, and Enchanter Rowntree sent word to them reporting Livia Glas' conduct during their shared mission. Our Diplomacy Division may reach out themselves, to repeat our concerns regarding Livia Glass, and to warn the Inquisition of the danger this lyrium posed. They might test their own stock and any other stock that has been recovered during similar raids.

It might be necessary to warn our own templars as well, and set someone to look into the chain of import that produced that batch of lyrium.

Gela, Stephen Strange, Vanya Orlov and I had some difficulty in Cledwyn. Sister Merran had been taken ill herself, and in the grip of fever created a fear in the villagers that demons were instigating their poor fortune.

It is thanks to Gela and Vanya's efforts that we were able to provide treatment to Sister Merran. Serrah Strange discovered the cause of their troubles. The crop was diseased, and while his methods were able to save some of their yield, some had to be destroyed. Gela's work with the villagers had earned the villagers trust, and with Sister Merran recovered, we were able to come to some decisions with the villagers as to what would be needed.

They requested some of the refugees be moved onwards from their village. We escorted a group into Kirkwall, with the hopes that they will be able to find work in the city during the winter months. It had also been suggested that with much of the Free Marches having seen damage through raids this summer and fall, that Cledwyn may be able to provide for them some assistance, due to their working mills. If we could facilitate these things, it would be greatly appreciated and I believe would impress Sister Merran further.

Regarding my work with Abby, Gwenaëlle, and Loxley in Sanavo village, we were able to successfully close the rift that had been hampering their work. I believe we made a good impression on the villagers and their leaders. I believe we would be happily received should Riftwatch representatives need to revisit Sanavo any time in the future.

– Derrica

NEXT STEPS:
● Fall out from invoking the Right of Conscription and alienating Livia Glas, determine what kind of ripple effects this might have with Riftwatch's relations to the Inquisition and by extension, the Chantry.
● Follow up with the trade house that transported the corrupted lyrium; Orzammar may be the place to start.
● Maintain contact with Sister Merran regarding the situation in Cledwyn. Transition groups of refugees onward from the village, and provide added support for the village by connecting them with villages in need of their intact mills or sending on supplies so they might have enough supplies to get through winter.
● Maintain friendly correspondence with Sanavo villagers.
● Promote distribution of Charles Tinel's work.

NOTES & LINKS:
While the report will appear as composed above, Derrica will not include any information in writing as to the presence of several Dairsmuid survivors living in Sanavo. She will report these findings, as well as their acquisition of the rogue Dairsmuid Templar, his new Kirkwall address and his willingness to address the Conclave verbally to Commander Flint.

SUMMARY: Having abandoned their previous homestead in Wildervale, a group of isolationist mages (known associates of Marcus Rowntree) has gone missing. Given the dramatics surrounding Marcus's last attempt to reach them, a group of Riftwatch agents has been ordered to track them down and verify their current status.

REPORT:
Commander, et all—

We are pleased to relay that we have found a number of Enchanter Rowntree's associates, and news that the rest had moved on to Ferelden. They are well, and have established a settlement that is growing, if not thriving. We were well-received, and our stay was pleasant.

We have marked the location on the attached map. I personally would not deem them a force to be marshaled for the battlefield, but I believe we might consider whether they could be convinced to take on refugees to supplant their number in the future.

No decision need be made immediately. I believe we might establish regular correspondence, and building a strong relationship in anticipation of what the future requires of us.
NEXT STEPS: Maintain contact with Greenhollow through familiar channels.

NOTES & LINKS: While the report will appear as composed above, an executive decision was made to redact large pieces of information about other events that occurred during their visit, namely: the incident of discovering that one of the younger members of the village had turned into an Abomination and had been kept contained in hiding (and her subsequent demise) will be omitted from anything written, if communicated verbally to Commander Flint.

(Cheerfully, in a bright voice that is Nevarran eventually, after one parses through the vocal funk,) Hello!

My name's Gela Baynrac and I'm a bit new. I've spent round about a month here now- I think, haven't been countin'- but I belong to your wonderful Diplomacy division, and I've got a favour to ask of you all.

Any gossip about? Maybe what you're lookin' forward to in the next month, or anythin' curious overheard while visitin' our neighbours– that kind of thing. It's part of our job to keep records, and mine, as you can imagine, are sparse. So if you've heard anythin' especially delicious lately, I'd love to know about it too.

Naturally, the office is always open for reports if you don't wish to speak aloud! Go well.

( petrana is not, often, on the crystals. there is rarely any shortage of things she had rather be more productively doing, but it has been...difficult to focus, working out of julius's office in his absence, staring hard at her crystal as it fails to produce any responses from either himself or from marcus. after the seventh message she has left the latter, she picks it up again to revised purpose.

so the voice that comes across the crystals will be less familiar to any new arrivals relying on them to acquaint themselves with riftwatch; pleasantly feminine with an accent that the untrained ear might mistake, depending on one's origin, for orlesian or for french. (it is neither.)

it is the sort of voice that was trained to speak clearly and correctly and, perhaps, with the expectation of speaking before an audience, though not one seeking entertainment.
)

Good day, Riftwatch. For those unfamiliar, I am Madame de Cedoux, chief cryptographer. I understand that we have among us some newer arrivals,

( whenever people begin kicking off on the crystals about work, it usually means either the chantry has done something, the mages want to do something, or there are new rifters. by a process of elimination, )

and I wished to bring to general attention my ongoing project. It is a key element of my role to design means of information security for ourselves and our allies. If you are fluent in a language not native to Thedas, comfortable with magic and literate in the language in question, it would be of great use to me if you were willing to allow me to acquire this familiarity from you. I have means, which are magical in nature, of streamlining such a process.

I am, further, interested in languages more native to Thedas—conversational Nevarran, Tevene, Antivan, these are of interest to me.

I am temporarily operating from the Sashamiri office, if you wish to volunteer your time and knowledge or have you queries that you had prefer to make in person.
