NOTES: Midday, Wintermarch. A call to testing the limits of an enchanted barrier system. Participants are encouraged to go ham on the barrier with physical and magical force (please stay clear of any boom zone), kind of like a wreck-it room but more productive. There's no separate testing log; you can handwave your character's involvement or you can thread out a scene in this post if you want to! OOC details on the barrier system are here. They'll be utilizing the full system for assessing how much damage it can take before becoming functionally useless. The recharging will be tested with two posts only to minimize strain on participants.

Simple refreshments will be provided: tea, biscuits (he made them himself!), butter and jam, sausages and a pot of mulled wine on his and Viktor's hot plate (for afterward).

Hey, it's Jayce from Research. Not to worry, this isn't about an unintentional combustion event. I'm looking for any available hands that won't mind testing the resistance force of a project intended to benefit the defenses of the Gallows. We'll need physical and magical force to mimic another siege, so... well, if you're looking to let off some steam, then this might be the perfect excuse to do so in the name of science.

Since these barriers, which are powered by lyrium, will eventually fail under enough force, I'd like to see if they can be... recharged, you know, in a pinch with magic, either from an anchor or a mage. Given how lyrium-hungry this system is, it probably won't amount to much, but we can obtain a baseline and extrapolate the data.

If you're available, let's meet outside the Gwaren outpost in forty-eight hours. Barrow, the Master of Works, will oversee us. Let us know so we can form a rough headcount. Oh, and, uh... if that time conflicts with the majority, then we'll reschedule. All right, thanks.

NOTES: If you want to do these and aren't on the message, hmu OOC and we’ll get your dude involved!

The eluvians place certain opportunities in better reach. I've a list of actions and points we might address; fold them into your existing work, where able.

I trust that I needn't underscore the importance of discretion. Be mindful of those you involve, and if you must shout about all this, for fuck's sake use the filter.

A quick note: we are going to be looking into the allegations that the Chantry's forces were overzealous with civilians in Tevinter. I am coordinating this for now. While we are out and about in Tevinter, if you hear anything about it, let me know. Even if they are only rumors and sound outlandish. And if it does not jeopardize anything else to ask people for more information, then by all means.

If this is something you would like to help more with on an ongoing basis, let me know. We're calling it Project Clothilde.

Good morrow, Riftwatch.

( Now, there’s a voice that hasn’t been on the crystals for a time. Years, in fact. The Starkhaven accent is strong as ever, and yet— some more nebulous quality has shifted. What was once careful and controlled, turned to diplomacy through practice, has turned to uniform flatness. Every word placid, every syllable even. )

My name is Herian Amsel. If we were previously acquainted then the possibility that word of my return has reached you already, and were circumstances suited to it, I would offer apology for being so withdrawn.

For those unfamiliar with me, or who have not become familiar with the details of my return, there are elements best not left unspoken.

You may notice differences in my speech and manner. This stems from the Rite of Tranquility, enacted by radicals acting outside the approval of the Chantry and Inquisition. Indeed, the attack was an attack against the Chantry and Inquisition, both.

I remember well the passion and fire of so many in Riftwatch; I share this news not to stoke those fires. These are matter that require thorough investigation. Rather,I speak to be transparent that this state is not one freely chosen, and such a revelation is an unkind one to inflict on others in the midst of other work. A good many find the Tranquil unsettling even before considering the context of how the Rite came to pass.

My presence hence is to serve Riftwatch, and if my presence disturbs you, please do not hesitate in letting it be known. I would sooner remove myself to another part of the keep to do my work, than some disconcerting quality to my aspect interfere with your work, or my circumstances evoking painful memories. One reason I have remained withdrawn was my own contemplations on potential negative impact my return in this state could alert.

Presently I have been assisting Doctor Strange, and learning of medical practices. If any could be troubled to lend assistance through procurement of clay, that would be most beneficial.

If you have questions you win to ask, I will endeavour to answer.

[ It would be wiser to limit this complaint to those it's relevant to—the handful of mages who might have been informed of this bargaining after the fact, specifically.

But Kostos isn't in Scouting anymore. Or Diplomacy. Or even Research. And so he's released from any expectation or obligation to be subtle and exercise discretion when he's spitting mad. Right? That's how that works?

Anyway. ]

RECIPIENT: Riftwatch at large
NOTES: Backdated slightly to a week and a half after the attack, maybe edging on two, time is fake.

Hey all. It's the Provost. I'm reaching out so everyone's aware and rumors don't go wild: Commander Flint is, indeed, absent from the Gallows. He's pursuing a time-sensitive action against Corypheus, and it's going to keep him out of pocket for a while.

In the meantime, Captain Rowntree will be stepping in to oversee the work of the Forces division. He's served ably as Captain of the Watch for some time, and the Scoutmaster and I will get him up to speed quickly with his new responsibilities. Most of you have been here long enough to experience changes in division leadership before [this a little wry, considering Cosima's relatively new position, but she's serious again for], and we expect you'll continue with your duties with minimal interruption.

[The previous statement sounds fluid but scripted, mainly because this last part feels more off-the-cuff:]

Everyone's been really pulling hard for the rebuilding effort, we know. It's appreciated. And if you've got any questions or concerns, you can speak to me or the Scoutmaster. Privately, if you want. Speaking for myself, I can't promise every question will have an answer, but I'd rather know what's on your mind than have it preoccupying you. Uh, that's it for now. Thanks.

A few updates,

[ trailing some days after the more heartbreaking ones. The first might not be news to everyone, depending on their personal sources, but to make sure everyone is up to speed: ]

They attacked Antiva City as well. No one specific has been named as a fatality—so no one wealthy, you know—but they targeted the harbor and the manufacturing infrastructure. We might see some further trade disruptions. And Denerim was harassed by a few dracolisk riders and had some injuries, but nothing dire. Maybe more about making sure they know they are not out of reach.

[ And some proper breaking news: ]

As for Kirkwall, I understand that the Guard-Captain and the nobility have convinced Varric Tethras he is needed here. He's the most likely to take over the Viscount's responsibilities for now. And on the topic, we should have a presence at Bran Cavin's funeral rites. We all owe him a great deal.

And we have a donation earmarked for—for some kind of memorial for our own. If anyone would like to have a hand in what it looks like, let me know. I'll connect you. And we should decide,

[ is this the time? is there such a thing as the time ]

Rifters. Those who have disappeared. Whether we would like to memorialize them when there is a chance they might come back.

SENDER: Petrana de Cedoux, Marcus Rowntree
RECIPIENT: All y'all
NOTES: News from the rest of the South; including deaths. If your character knows somebody in Skyhold who might send something back to them, Petrana and Marcus can absolutely carry a within reason amount of letters or keepsakes.

If I may take a moment of your time, Riftwatch.

This is Madame de Cedoux. In my capacity as chief cryptographer and a member of our diplomacy division, I have been dispatched to Skyhold to exchange intelligence with the Inquisition, and it is my purpose now to share what I may from my discussion with Spymaster Leliana. Captain Rowntree has accompanied me, and has continued to the front to gather further information upon which he will elaborate, likewise by crystal.

Grave news, I'm afraid, has abounded across Thedas. Kirkwall — and, indeed, Minrathous — was not alone in either the strike or the severity of what was recently experienced. Skyhold itself has not been penetrated, though dracolisks were sighted and their riders believed to have been seeking the stronghold—these same riders may have been responsible for a dracolisk attack upon Orzammar's main known entrance. It appears to have been in the vein of a — impulse decision, perhaps driven by their inability to access their chosen target. The entrance is expected to take some weeks to dig out anew, and trade is expected to be impacted.

I regret to report that Griffon Wing Keep suffered grievous losses to their number under an attack led by an unidentified, speaking darkspawn. Many of the Wardens were compelled to take arms against one another, and we mourn the losses among others of Wardens Nathaniel and Anders Howe, and the Wardens Alistair and Oghren, as well as, once of our Research division, one Casimir Lyov.

( it has been a long time since she had been at ease with the howes— but that there will be no further opportunities, not ever, is a bitter thing to sit with as they had left things. )

Val Royeaux and Val Chevin are both among the cities struck. The Divine has ( regrettably, though her voice has returned to the level and matter of fact recounting, ) survived the attack on her Grand Cathedral, but both the Chantry there and the harbour in Val Chevin have taken great damage, and heavy loss. Melys, representing our Scouting division further afield,

( it is much harder to keep her voice steady now, that old letter ringing in her ears, miss you darkly, darling, but she does, )

was among the fatalities.

Captain Rowntree, if you would.

The Imperium launched an attack against the encampment of the Exalted March. There were many casualties. I'm told there was a targetted strike that took the lives of Cassandra Pentaghast and Cullen Rutherford, of the Inquisition.

[ A pause, before diverting. ]

Word, too, of an attack in Ostwick. As with the assault on the front, and that in Kirkwall, the enemy rode in dracolisks and sought to cause damage with magical explosives. The harbour and its fortress and stockhouses were destroyed. There is some report of skirmishing in east Nevarra, Van Markham territory, but no word of heavy losses.

There are those of our number who had departed to the front—those that also fell. Joselyn Smythe and Tsenka Abendroth, [ and if there was more to say, which there wasn't, the rough twist at this last syllable, a hard, dry edge in his voice, means he stops there. ]

( softly, she says: ) Thank you, Captain.

I will remain in Skyhold through the evening meal, and from here, the captain and I will return to Kirkwall. If there are brief messages you would have me carry to those you know within Skyhold, I will do what I am able before we depart.
