CRYSTALS | Mage jobs, jobs for mages

FORM: Crystals
SENDER: Isaac
RECIPIENT: Locked to Benedict, Julius, Kostos, Nell, Petrana, Strange. Marcus is optional. Vega is accidental.
NOTES: If you want to do these and aren't on the message, hmu OOC and we’ll get your dude involved!

The eluvians place certain opportunities in better reach. I've a list of actions and points we might address; fold them into your existing work, where able.

I trust that I needn't underscore the importance of discretion. Be mindful of those you involve, and if you must shout about all this, for fuck's sake use the filter.

I believe the interviews that Marcus conducted with our former Templars here may come in useful for leads toward some we may look towards that are less directly linked to ourselves,

( definitely sounds like petrana considered and then dismissed out of hand messing with coupe. )

Naturally. ( of her beloved's meticulous notekeeping. look at how she doesn't bitch about his illiteracy in company. ) And to speak to our own, Orlov seems a possible route of the desirous-to-unburden-oneself sort— I daresay one does not divest lightly of such an addiction as lyrium.

We will be better served further afield, I think, but they are places to begin.

Quietly though. For the record. ]

Why do we give a shit about inheritance?

[It's Colonel Irony here to answer:]

Besides making it possible for mages to secure legal recourse when people don't respect their wishes about where their property goes [like when pirates just take it, for example], it could give families of mages a concrete stake in how mages are treated and what happens to them. Once inheritance is secured, people who care about such things will plan around it, and suddenly the Chantry will have a lot of irritated non-mage nobles on their hands if they try to interfere, especially the longer it's been.

You don't have to inherit from your family to have right to your possessions.

The matter is twofold. Practically, it offers a path to legitimacy and influence that can be beneficial to us in the future; our voices in new spaces, to be seen in different contexts, to demonstrate the value that we can offer to those places.

Socially— if we are to be integrated into the world and to exist within it as whole citizenry and participants, then we must participate in the world. Inheritance goes beyond the limited question of titles and those who claim them— where does that separation end? If a mage owns land, can their children inherit that land? Who is entitled to it if not? Why can a mage not own land? Where are we meant to live?

We know the answers to those questions.

[ It's a little about him. "Sorry, I can't" is a very convenient thing to be able to tell his mother in the event his idiot brother tries to kill another king or something. But he can hardly admit that now. ]

You think adding mages to the Orlesian nobility is going to be good for anyone?

I think a fair few Laetans would jump at the opportunity to shake things up. Sorry-- civilian mages. I can try reaching out to some, to test the waters.

[a pause,]

I also-- not that I have any chance left of inheriting, but is it worthwhile to investigate other Alti who might be interested in brokering freedom for the South?

( He loves being in a secret super-special club, )

On the topic of inheritance. Are we worried at all about that possibly painting additional targets on mages’ backs? Bitter younger siblings going their whole lives thinking they’re bound to inherit, now supplanted by a firstborn mage that they’d rather just get rid of?

Admittedly, ’never own any property’ isn’t the answer, but. That transitional phase might be trouble.

As Isaac says— this is simply doing business. In such business there is opportunity. Mages have ever, I understand, had their roles to play in these intrigues, as witches in Sulleciel did once; as in Sulleciel, we propose leverage to act as player and not pawn.

[personal profile] portalling 2024-10-16 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in the long run, being on the board at all is presumably better than mages remaining a non-entity. Still, being a player means others wanting to cut your legs out from under you; people get unbelievably shitty when inheritances are involved.

Anyway. I’m not actually touching that bee hive with a ten-foot pole, that’s for people with better penmanship and better diplomacy. I’m more interested in researching Harrowings and their alternatives.
