CRYSTALS | Mage jobs, jobs for mages
FORM: Crystals
SENDER: Isaac
RECIPIENT: Locked to Benedict, Julius, Kostos, Nell, Petrana, Strange. Marcus is optional. Vega is accidental.
NOTES: If you want to do these and aren't on the message, hmu OOC and we’ll get your dude involved!
The eluvians place certain opportunities in better reach. I've a list of actions and points we might address; fold them into your existing work, where able.
I trust that I needn't underscore the importance of discretion. Be mindful of those you involve, and if you must shout about all this, for fuck's sake use the filter.

Quietly though. For the record. ]
Why do we give a shit about inheritance?

Besides making it possible for mages to secure legal recourse when people don't respect their wishes about where their property goes [like when pirates just take it, for example], it could give families of mages a concrete stake in how mages are treated and what happens to them. Once inheritance is secured, people who care about such things will plan around it, and suddenly the Chantry will have a lot of irritated non-mage nobles on their hands if they try to interfere, especially the longer it's been.
here. very here. making increasingly aggressive eye contact with him here.

Socially— if we are to be integrated into the world and to exist within it as whole citizenry and participants, then we must participate in the world. Inheritance goes beyond the limited question of titles and those who claim them— where does that separation end? If a mage owns land, can their children inherit that land? Who is entitled to it if not? Why can a mage not own land? Where are we meant to live?
We know the answers to those questions.

Everyone knows what value we can offer in those places. They can look at Tevinter.

[ It's a little about him. "Sorry, I can't" is a very convenient thing to be able to tell his mother in the event his idiot brother tries to kill another king or something. But he can hardly admit that now. ]
You think adding mages to the Orlesian nobility is going to be good for anyone?

[a pause,]
I also-- not that I have any chance left of inheriting, but is it worthwhile to investigate other Alti who might be interested in brokering freedom for the South?

On the topic of inheritance. Are we worried at all about that possibly painting additional targets on mages’ backs? Bitter younger siblings going their whole lives thinking they’re bound to inherit, now supplanted by a firstborn mage that they’d rather just get rid of?
Admittedly, ’never own any property’ isn’t the answer, but. That transitional phase might be trouble.

We should be prepared to support those seeking claims, or to wrangle concessions out of the individual choice to withdraw. Getting rid of anyone takes resources that some might be convinced to spend upfront, instead. A bargain to disavow one's position.

Anyway. I’m not actually touching that bee hive with a ten-foot pole, that’s for people with better penmanship and better diplomacy. I’m more interested in researching Harrowings and their alternatives.
