I never thought I would return to live in this city, of all places.

[Fenris sounds less than thrilled. But he’s at least trying out this ‘communication’ thing for once. Varric would be so proud.]

How do you know when you’re truly home? What makes that different from merely a place where you happen to live?

[Honestly curious here. He’d once thought he’d almost come close to that before in Kirkwall, but at the moment, he’s not so sure. Maybe there’s just something... off... about returning to a place after a long time away. So much changes and yet remains the same all at once.]

Hell if I know. I've never stayed in one spot long enough for that to happen. For me, 'home' is certain people and that's it.

And if those people are no longer there? What then? [He is so not going to admit it, but yes, their little group had started to feel that way by the end. More or less.]

I did. I do. There are certain complications with that at the moment, but it was a place I primarily lived the last time I was here.

[And for all that he'll grumble and complain about certain things in Kirkwall... he's noticing in ways that he'd somewhat missed other things about it.]

You find some new people. If there's one thing I've learned from being on the road so much it's that people come and go all the time. You have to be adaptable.

...a fair question. In times past, when I was still in a Circle tower, I could have more easily answered you. I belonged there, prospered. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. But...that time is over, and I can no longer see myself within those walls.

[Her tone is slightly melancholy at that; it was her home for the longest time, flaws and all, but she would be lying -to him and herself- if that still applied. For good or ill (and there is plenty of both), she now belongs to the world outside.]

And now? Do you feel at home in the Inquisition? The Wardens?

It sounds like being in the Circle gave you a sense of belonging. What do you think will become of new mages now, without that in place, I wonder...

[Bad things, awful things, nothing good whatsoever, or so Fenris believes. Inessa is good evidence that the Circles could work. They absolutely were necessary.]

It's slightly premature to say, when a new Divine has yet to be chosen. [And she knows that no matter what happens, in the end that will make all the difference.] But for now, the Inquisition's mages have organized and educated each other, and continue to do so. If new mages can be brought over to our cause, we can aid their training. [It will have to be good enough.]

I suppose I feel most at home with my fellow Wardens--those of the south, at least. What is happening in the Anderfels has effectively divided us.

That's apparently a popular answer. Would you consider that the case no matter where you were? Even if it was somewhere entirely unpleasant?

Considering that I have traveled from one end of Northern Thedas to the other, with the same brave company of men and women? Yes. Yes I would.

Kind of depends on the person. Everyone thinks of it a little differently. [Prompto's been thinking about this himself, for his own reasons.] To me, home is the place where you feel like you're safest. Or the people you feel safest with. The place or the people you feel relaxed with and feel like you belong.

[It's something he thinks about on and off a great deal, himself. Oh, sure, he might try and act like it's nothing, but sometimes the lack of a "true" home does bother him.]

So a sense of safety is something you'd consider especially important?

It should be a part of it, I'd think. Sometimes it doesn't happen. I know what it's like to have a home come under attack, and other stuff happens, too. But a home is a place you should be able to feel safe in, or with.

Vague, but... I probably shouldn't be surprised that there's such freedom in how it's defined.

[Which isn't a bad thing, in itself, freedom is always better as opposed to the alternative.]

No one person feels the same about where they belong and how they fit there, so it is, by nature, a vague concept.

What about when you're there? Do you appreciate it while there, or does it take that separation to realize what you have?

I think maybe...it's something you don't know when you're there. That you miss it when it's gone, and you only realize it in hindsight, but...that's just me guessing from sentimental crap, I guess. I've never felt that myself.

I'll be sure to. [It's a little... almost comforting in a strange way, to know that others don't have it figured out, either. Most others have gotten a head start on things that he didn't have.]

I've never felt it either. [Not entirely true, he's pretty sure he did feel it, among the Fog Warriors and... among Hawke and the others. It's just not something he wants to admit.] Which is why I'm so interested in understanding it better. I wonder, though, if it's even possible to ever return to that same place, after it's gone. It will change, after all... and so will you, for that matter.
