I never thought I would return to live in this city, of all places.

[Fenris sounds less than thrilled. But he’s at least trying out this ‘communication’ thing for once. Varric would be so proud.]

How do you know when you’re truly home? What makes that different from merely a place where you happen to live?

[Honestly curious here. He’d once thought he’d almost come close to that before in Kirkwall, but at the moment, he’s not so sure. Maybe there’s just something... off... about returning to a place after a long time away. So much changes and yet remains the same all at once.]

[It's something he thinks about on and off a great deal, himself. Oh, sure, he might try and act like it's nothing, but sometimes the lack of a "true" home does bother him.]

So a sense of safety is something you'd consider especially important?

It should be a part of it, I'd think. Sometimes it doesn't happen. I know what it's like to have a home come under attack, and other stuff happens, too. But a home is a place you should be able to feel safe in, or with.

What if you never feel safe? Would it just have to be the place where you're... relatively safe in comparison with other places?

[Settling down... that's something he's tried to do, but there's often that anxious tension making him look over his shoulder often. Habits from being on the run are hard to break, sometimes.]

I... guess so. Sounds like a hard way to live, never feeling safe.

[And a depressing one.]

Yet one can never be too cautious, no matter how safe they might feel. Complacency is no good, it only makes it worse when something inevitably goes wrong.

[Don't mind him being Mr. Pessimist over here.]

Aww. That's a rough way to live, always expecting the worst. Sure, stuff can go wrong, but it shouldn't mean you have to live your life always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I consider it being realistic. If I'm prepared for the worst, it won't surprise me when it happens.

Isn't that exhausting though? Living every moment, waiting for something to go wrong? Hard to enjoy life that way.

I guess it could be, sometimes. I don't see it that way, though.

How do you see it then?

In my experience, it's better to be prepared for anything. Everything may change entirely from what you expect at a moment's notice. I'd rather be too wary than the opposite. I'd rather survive than be caught unaware.

[It's how you get by in Thedas, and really... it's how he's gotten by in general. He's never quite lost the attitude of someone on the run.]

Even if surviving means not being able to fully enjoy the life you've got?

[Prompto laughs a little sheepishly. He realizes it sounds like he's arguing with him, which isn't really what he's trying to do.] I mean, I get it. And maybe I've just been lucky, I don't know. But I don't think it's a bad thing to just... take a breather every now and then and just relax.

[He has a point, though. But it's easier said than done for him to settle down completely. Certain habits of the past just haven't gone away, or he's slipped back into them again lately.]

It's not such a bad thing. No, of course it's not. [Now he's thinking about those nights spent playing cards with the others. Does he... kind of miss it?] Maybe you're right.
