I never thought I would return to live in this city, of all places.

[Fenris sounds less than thrilled. But he’s at least trying out this ‘communication’ thing for once. Varric would be so proud.]

How do you know when you’re truly home? What makes that different from merely a place where you happen to live?

[Honestly curious here. He’d once thought he’d almost come close to that before in Kirkwall, but at the moment, he’s not so sure. Maybe there’s just something... off... about returning to a place after a long time away. So much changes and yet remains the same all at once.]

Then you find them again. If that's what you want. If you don't, you might be out of luck anyway, because they might track you down.

Some of us are very good at not being found if we don't want to be. But I understand what you're saying. Those who are truly important won't ever leave your life entirely. Not for long, anyway.

Yeah. They always find a way to get back in. Pretty useless trying to stop them. [That's the voice of experience talking.] I've thought I'd be better off on my own. Didn't go the way I'd planned. And I've tracked down a few of my friends who thought the same. Infliction of company, I guess.

Do you want to be in this city again?

There's no outrunning some things, apparently. [Not that it's all so bad, there are certain people who he'd really gotten used to, and grown to enjoy being around. Who says it's not possible to drag a brooding elf out from time to time?]

I thought I didn't. That was a part of my life which happened, and is now over. But now... I'm not sure. I don't mind being here as much as I'd thought before.

Everyone's always saying how bad Kirkwall is. Doesn't seem that bad to me. I mean, I've never lived here, might be some stuff about it I don't know, but so far--it's just another city. All the stuff that's happened here could have happened anywhere. Half of it probably did.

Even worse has happened elsewhere. [He won't get into the details of such, but leaving it at that may make the point well enough, anyway.] I wouldn't say Kirkwall is entirely a great place to be... but nor is it the worst.

[He'd more or less learned what it really meant to have his own life, here, which has to count for something.]

Sounds like as good a reason to start calling this place home as any. Think they'll start using that officially? 'Kirkwall--not the best, but also not the worst.'

Perhaps so... but I may need to give it more time before making that judgment for certain. [And even he has to give a mildly amused sound at the Kirkwall part.] It's not bad at all... certainly accurate. It'll surely bring in eager visitors from all over Thedas.

Hopefully not too soon. Gotta give all of us time to open inns.

Ah, yes... I knew there would be some excitement to getting here first.
