Inquisition! We have for you a list of nominees for your Satinalia Fools. We say Fools, plural, because we have many fine nominees and two crowns - we think they may be crowns. We removed them from the heads of statues in some temple or another. Perhaps they were symbols of shame rather than nobility? None of us is qualified to say, but the statues were very small compared to some others, and - [ an abrupt end to the rambling ] - we will assume they are close enough to crowns to crown Fools. Valentine has been testing them and looks very Foolish.

Two Fools, then. If they cannot cooperate we will give each one half of the courtyard during the festivities and they may, éventuellement, stage a battle between their kingdoms.

We have placed a box outside the tavern where you can place the name of the nominee you wish to support. Please only choose once. The Maker does not endorse cheating. If you do not believe in the Maker then whatever you do believe in likely does not endorse cheating, either, though, again, none of us is qualified to say. If you believe in a god that does endorse cheating, please find it in your own heart to practice restraint.

Certainly not. He nearly had a moment of dignity, once, but we rescued him from it by knocking him into a pit. He remains exceedingly grateful.

Exceedingly. This is why I always concede the straws, when they are drawn, and never protest. [Well.] Overmuch.

But I do look marvelous in a crown. Jehan, please, attest to my marvelousness once more.

Conceding seems dangerously close to being dignified, though. You may wish to be careful with the line you're walking here, though speaking of one's marvelousness with a crown on their brow helps.

You must understand, monsieur, that conceding here often means that Val sleeps on the floor, or perhaps with the horses, and awakes with dust or hay in his hair—there is no dignity in it at all. Merely decency.

As for his marvelousness: picture if you will a mountain crowned by a perfect cap of snow. The halo of gold on the horizon during a sunset at sea. The mosaic ceiling of the Chantry in Val Firmin. The image of Valentine in a crown is not only comparable to these, but preferable.

[In a voice of one genuinely touched:]

That sounds like quite the magnificent picture. Perhaps you should have spoken for his crowning as well.

It is divine inspiration. Jehan is so holy a man. At times I swear that the Maker speaks through him--especially when he has had quite a lot of wine.

And if you cast your vote for me, my friend, I promise you: you will see it for yourself.

I wish now that I had. I'd not truly seen how great a fit you could be for this until now.

But you can change your vote, of course.

I didn't know that I could. Next year, I believe you'll have my vote.

So you are very convinced in whoever you voted for this year. I see how it is.

It's more that I don't know how one takes back a note in a box fairly.

I'm sorry, is there a retrieve paper spell that I've not heard of?

Is there? I am no mage. You tell me.

What I'm saying is that there's no spell made to retrieve a single, specific piece of paper from a box that I've ever heard of. I could use force magic to move many pieces of paper, fire to eliminate them all, but neither would have the desired effect.

Next year I'll vote better.

To correct a mistake, yes.

That's not fair, though. Not everyone will be voting twice.

Is that my fault, monsieur? Everyone should have thought of that when they cast their votes. Just because I am the one who did think of it, and suggest it--should I be punished?

Unfortunately this time? Yes. But stick around a year. You'll have my vote then.

I admire your apparent inability to be swayed. I suppose not even a bribe would do it. Very well, then: if we are all still here in a year, I shall count on it. I do not like to think so restricted of my future. It cuts so short all the plans that I have.

But for your vote, perhaps I will stay, or at the very least, return.
