Did it strike at you?

[ The sound of a door opening and shutting, and after a moment or two, papers ruffling, as though someone's hurriedly flipping through one book and then another. ]

I've found what I was thinking of. If you'll forgive a quotation--In the next few weeks, we found ourselves besieged by a strange menace. The first two occasions on which it struck, we found few remains of our brethren--and that's a rather unpleasant description, we needn't read that bit, but when the third man is attacked, he says: The culprit was a great serpent, crowned like the Maker in all his glory on the golden throne.

Of course, Brother Lamela's writing is hardly unimpeachable, but this sounds like your snake.

...crowned. It had, um. Sort of yellow marks on its head. That could be what it's talking about, if it's the same snake.

Yes--yellow marks would be the implication.

I'm afraid I've never cared much for snakes, so I don't know much more than what's written here, but this is from his travels in the Anderfels. You haven't come across any fjords, have you?

No, not as yet.

Do you mean the Feral Fjords north of Laysh? [ Musing: ] There is said to be jungle up there.

Yes. The snake incident is from earlier in Lamela's travels, before he makes his way down the coast to Laysh. You might not be precisely on the coast, but I suspect you're in the area.

...Of course, this all depends on the prevelance of such snakes in the jungle. It's certainly possible that there are other jungles with similar creatures--I'm afraid I've not studied the natural world enough to know.

On all maps I've seen, that jungle covers the entire region north of the Donarks. I don't know that anyone has yet found the end of it.

[ She does not spell out what that could mean. How far they could be. ]

Unless Brother Lamela provided some indication the snake should be found only around the fjords?
