I used to run away from home a lot.

[ She doesn't sound angry, though—if Kitty pushes, she'll probably elaborate. ]

I don't know. That's for you to judge, I guess. Is it?

[coppelganger]

A bit.

[ There's a short pause, and then— ]

I grew up in foster care. I was adopted, but I was... you know. [ #abandonmentissues ] My mum—foster mum—moved us from Brixton to Toronto when I was like twelve, and at first it seemed like it was gonna be this great thing, new start, all that. In the end it just ended up being the same life, if that makes sense?

[rathercommon]

Mm.

[ She thinks about it a moment, then says - ]

Yeah. It does. And it was - bad?

[coppelganger]

It wasn't what I wanted. And I can be kind of a twat sometimes. So I would run away and get high and cause trouble.

[rathercommon]

And then the police would come for you?

[ There's a slightly ominous note in her voice as she asks that. The police coming, in her experience, is, well...very dire. ]

My mum would call them, or sometimes I'd do something stupid and get myself caught. I was arrested a few times, but I was just a dumb kid.

[ And these days she has cops and other shady people coming after her again, but she's not going to bring that up. ]

And nothing ever happened to you?

[coppelganger]

What do you mean? What would happen?

[ She's getting a bit concerned. ]

[rathercommon]

Well - you know.

[ A small shrug. ]

People go missing, all that. [ Or. ] That's - not a problem in your world?

[coppelganger]

Uh... well, it is, but not for most people.

[rathercommon]

Mm. And your police are - human?

[coppelganger]

As far as I know. I'm taking it yours aren't human?

[rathercommon]

Some of them are. But most are werewolves.

[coppelganger]

[ That makes her raise an eyebrow. ]

Werewolves.

[rathercommon]

Yeah. What, is it hard to believe that werewolves can be police?

[coppelganger]

Werewolves are fictional where I'm from. [ A pause. ] As far as I know.

[rathercommon]

Fictional?

[ Puzzled: ]

Meaning, like - extinct?

[coppelganger]

No... meaning like never existed at all.

[rathercommon]

But you've got stories about them. Why would you have stories about 'em if you never had 'em?

[coppelganger]

Your world doesn't have any stories about things that don't exist?

[rathercommon]

Of course we do. But we haven't got stories about things that actually do exist in other worlds. Do you see? It's like - somehow, in your world, you know something about mine. And that's weird.
