So, there's this dog that started following me about. I guess it's mine now or - something. Anyway. Has anyone got ideas for a name?

Okay, where'd you get all those names?

[zombra]

Why? What's wrong with them?

[rathercommon]

Nothing, really. It's just that they're not obvious ones. You know, if it were, like, Spot, Rover, then I'd totally get it. But - I've never seen a dog and thought, oh, yeah, Franco.

[zombra]

Well that's what makes it a good name. You don't wanna say "Here, Spot!" and have five dogs running over to you, right?

Unless I wanted to start some sort of dog-farm, I suppose.

[zombra]

It'd probably be a good business here, but yeah, prooobably don't want to be collecting other people's generically named dogs.

Probably not. So where are the names from?

[zombra]

Oh, people who were at the peak of athletic prowess. We saw them as heroes where I'm from.

[rathercommon]

[ A disgruntled noise. ]

What, like, cricketers or something? Or footballers?

[zombra]

Maaaaaaaaaaybe. But they're good names! You don't need to know who they are to appreciate the name.

I completely do. What if I end up naming the dog after someone dreadful?

[zombra]

Are you serious? I wouldn't suggest these names if they were like, serial killers. These are names I might use if I get a pet here someday.

Well, I don't know that! I don't know you. And some people here have demented senses of humor.

[zombra]

Okay, I guess that's fair. But like... you asked for names. Who's to say everyone's not gonna troll you with their suggestions?

[rathercommon]

Troll?

[ Though - ]

Never mind. I can guess what that means. I mean, nothing. But I'm only going to take the suggestions that I like.

[zombra]

Well, obviously. That's why I threw out a bunch and I doubt I'm the only one who's gonna be giving you names.

And I'm only gonna like 'em if I know the stories behind 'em.

[zombra]

Huh. Never thought naming a dog was such a big deal. Thought you just pick something that sounds cool or fits the dog. We had a dachshund when I was growing up. Her name was Penny because she was copper colored. Easy.

Well, I've never had a dog before. But - naming something after someone is an honor, right? I don't want to honor someone who's awful.

[zombra]

Yeah, but again, you're asking for names from a bunch of randos here. Even if they tell you a story about a great hero, another person could come in and say "Wow, don't use that name. That guy killed hundreds." Like it's all a matter of perspective. Maybe you should just go with a color or something. Maybe a pun. Everybody likes puns.

That's not remotely true. Plenty of people hate puns. [ Though - ] I don't mind 'em, though.

[zombra]

Can you even really call them people if they hate puns?

Well, punning's often just about showing off how clever you are, isn't it. That can be awfully obnoxious.

Eh, they're just a form of joke, in my opinion.

[rathercommon]

[ Kitty shakes her head. It's the second time Kitty's bumped up against an eh it's not that deep, and so this time, she protests - ]

Except that things always mean a lot more than the surface-level stuff. Especially jokes. You can tell a lot about what a person believes from their sense of humor.
