So, there's this dog that started following me about. I guess it's mine now or - something. Anyway. Has anyone got ideas for a name?

Okay, I guess that's fair. But like... you asked for names. Who's to say everyone's not gonna troll you with their suggestions?

Troll?

[ Though - ]

Never mind. I can guess what that means. I mean, nothing. But I'm only going to take the suggestions that I like.

[zombra]

Well, obviously. That's why I threw out a bunch and I doubt I'm the only one who's gonna be giving you names.

[rathercommon]

And I'm only gonna like 'em if I know the stories behind 'em.

[zombra]

Huh. Never thought naming a dog was such a big deal. Thought you just pick something that sounds cool or fits the dog. We had a dachshund when I was growing up. Her name was Penny because she was copper colored. Easy.

[rathercommon]

Well, I've never had a dog before. But - naming something after someone is an honor, right? I don't want to honor someone who's awful.

[zombra]

Yeah, but again, you're asking for names from a bunch of randos here. Even if they tell you a story about a great hero, another person could come in and say "Wow, don't use that name. That guy killed hundreds." Like it's all a matter of perspective. Maybe you should just go with a color or something. Maybe a pun. Everybody likes puns.

That's not remotely true. Plenty of people hate puns. [ Though - ] I don't mind 'em, though.

[zombra]

[ Jokingly: ]

Can you even really call them people if they hate puns?

[rathercommon]

Well, punning's often just about showing off how clever you are, isn't it. That can be awfully obnoxious.

[zombra]

Eh, they're just a form of joke, in my opinion.

[rathercommon]

[ Kitty shakes her head. It's the second time Kitty's bumped up against an eh it's not that deep, and so this time, she protests - ]

Except that things always mean a lot more than the surface-level stuff. Especially jokes. You can tell a lot about what a person believes from their sense of humor.

[zombra]

What, like all people who use puns are obnoxious?

[rathercommon]

No. But some people who use puns want people to know they're clever. Or people who make jokes at others' expense but can't laugh at themselves.

[zombra]

Soooo... watch out for people who suggest pun dog names, I guess?

[ What even is the big deal, she asks herself. She doesn't ask aloud, because she's learning that plenty of people here get their gutchies in a twist about anything and she's not savvy enough to navigate through it all. ]

Well, no. I mean, the fact that someone is really self-satisfied, that doesn't make them a bad person or anything.

[zombra]

All right. I can get behind that.

[ A pause. ]

I don't think I ever asked: male or female dog?

[rathercommon]

Oh - she's a girl.

[zombra]

[ A thoughtful hum. ]

Lady. That's good, right?

[rathercommon]

[ A slightly dissatisfied grunt. ]

I don't really have much faith in systems of nobility.

[zombra]

Umm...

I'm talking about the dog character from Lady and the Tramp. I guess... you never saw it. Never miiiiind.

What is that, a play or something?

[zombra]

Movie. An animated one, actually. I was really into it when I was a kid.

[rathercommon]

What's a movie, exactly?

[zombra]

Oh, man.

[ There's a pause. ]

Like a play, but it's not live and in person. It's like looking at the pictures in a book, but they move. And there's sound.
