So, there's this dog that started following me about. I guess it's mine now or - something. Anyway. Has anyone got ideas for a name?

Lady. That's good, right?

[ A slightly dissatisfied grunt. ]

I don't really have much faith in systems of nobility.

Umm...

I'm talking about the dog character from Lady and the Tramp. I guess... you never saw it. Never miiiiind.

[ Uh - ]

What is that, a play or something?

[zombra]

Movie. An animated one, actually. I was really into it when I was a kid.

What's a movie, exactly?

[zombra]

Oh, man.

[ There's a pause. ]

Like a play, but it's not live and in person. It's like looking at the pictures in a book, but they move. And there's sound.

[rathercommon]

So - like a flip-book? Or a zoetrope?

[zombra]

Uh, yes to the first. No idea about the second.

[rathercommon]

It's a circle that spins, and when you look inside the images seem to move. No sound, though.

[zombra]

Ohhhh, okay. I think I've seen those before.

[ Like on tv when they were showing this outdated piece of nonsense that used to amuse people. ]

Anyway, Lady is a dog from the movie. She belongs to a family but gets lost without her collar and has to hide from the dog catcher. This dog named Tramp and all the stray dogs in the story help her get adjusted to life on the streets, and she and the Tramp fall in puppy love. And blah blah, stuff happens; at the end she's reunited with her family and they adopt Tramp too.

Sounds quite lovely.

[ She doesn't sound like she thinks it's lovely. ]

About as lovely as your attitude, I guess.

That's a bit rude to say, isn't it.

I mean, just following suit. You were totally free to say "I don't think that name will work," but instead you were all,

[ And here she imitates the grunt and tone of voice, but thankfully not the accent. ]

"Sounds quite lovely." Like, okay? So don't use it? Why the attitude?

It's not the name. It's -

[ Well. ]

That "movie" of yours just sounds like total propaganda.

[zombra]

Well, yeah, it's a Disney movie. They're for kids, so they're all wholesome and teach a lesson. And the good guys get a happy ending. Like, you're not supposed to think too hard about logic in a Disney movie. [ What even was Frozen? Seriously. ] Dogs don't talk either, but they do in this.

[rathercommon]

Sure. The happy ending being handed down, of course, by the benevolence of the rich and powerful. Teaching children that even if they're locked in a cycle of poverty, they need to serve the wealthy, and perhaps they'll be rewarded with an escape from their misery if they do. They never will, of course - but that hope will keep them docile.

[ Wow, Tessa does not have enough coffee to deal with this. ]

Only with dogs.

[ Yeeeeah, Tessa doesn't care very much. ]

Dogs as a stand-in for the underclass. There's a reason they have the dogs talk, after all. So that children, they'll see themselves in 'em. See a model for the life they're supposed to be living.

[zombra]

Yup.

[ Tessa's rolling her eyes so hard right now. ]

There's no denying it. That film was straight up propaganda. Of course, it hardly matters now since my world's been overrun by zombies and most people are dead. Not really any class system to fight anymore.

Well -

[ Kitty doesn't know what a zombie is, though it's hard not to understand "most people are dead." It does take the wind out of her sails. So - ]

Sorry. That's wretched.

[zombra]

Yeah, sure is. That's why I'd prefer to stay in Thedas. Or find a way to another world.

[ Tessa tends to spill this info in the most awkward way possible, and she usually apologizes for it, but in this case at least she cut off any more ranting about eating the rich and the rise of the proletariat when all she was trying to do was suggest cute dog names to Ms. Picky here. ]

Anyway, I'm sure you'll get a lot more name suggestions. Dogs seem to be popular around here. Hope you find one for her without too much searching.
