If everyone could spare a moment of their attention—

DON’T ACT LIKE YOU DON’T KNOW THEY’RE ALL JUST TRYING TO LOOK BUSY.

[ There is a pause, a chuckle, and then, smoothly- ]

Just one item for your consideration, concerning some activity around Val Chevin. I'm sure we all remember the defeat as Ghislain, and the subsequent capture of Val Chevin. Since then our enemy has mostly concerned themselves with quietly fortifying their position while the Orlesian navy prevented them from fully enjoying their access to the Waking Sea.

IF THERE’S ONE THING ORLESIANS EXCEL AT IT’S MAKING SURE NOBODY MORE THAN HALF ENJOYS ANYTHING.

Well, more or less. [ currently: less ] I've received word that the blockade has broken. [ Quietly, Skull says: Whoopsie~ ] I can't say exactly how, because every story I've heard so far has been fairly fantastic and dissimilar from the one that preceded it, but the common factor in every rumor is that the blockade has failed. We can be assured that there was some sort of battle, and it was settled very decisively in favor of the enemy.

Which is bad news for everyone except merchants who don't mind trading with Corypheus, I suppose.

AND ME, BUT ONLY BECAUSE I DON’T REALLY CARE. NOW, GET OUT OF MY OFFICE,JONATHAN.

To Riftwatch—

Recent intelligence has afforded us some insight as to the current situation in Nevarra City following the outbreak of hostilities. It appears—either as a show of pride or in order to discourage the Van Markhams from acting further on the rumors which surround Lady Aurelia—the Pentaghasts have begun to station mummies about the capitol city.

We have reason to believe these mummies may be affected by the same red lyrium which triggered the disturbance during the Inquisition's last visit to the Grand Necropolis. Meanwhile, those among the Mortalitasi who we know to have been aware of the potential risk now seem to be suffering from a truly astoundingly high probability of premature death. No word as to whether the knives were discovered in their backs or simply on their persons.

We will be personally attending to the matter of verifying the safety [can you hear the faintest note of droll humor? because it's there.] of the mummies and re-affirming which contacts in the city can be trusted. Pack light and organize to travel in small groups. The griffons will be posted as potential reinforcements in the hills surrounding the city; each will need a rider. We are to be visiting for the Satinalia holiday and everyone is to make arrangements to be costumed appropriately. Lastly, given our close association to the ['desecration' feels like a strong word] damage done in the past, it would be wise to avoid identification.

Should you have specific questions as opposed to general sentiment, report to your Division Heads.

[A small shuffling of paper. Then, as if this is simply business as usual and there is nothing strange about shifting gears from 'operations to be done undercover in a city on the brink of war' to minor administrative affairs, Flint adds:]

Matthias will be acting as assistant to the Forces Division from this point forward. For the time being, route all questions related to the division which have no bearing on the present through him.

Here's a bedtime story, you reprobates.

It's come to my attention we've had the situation all wrong between the Pentaghasts and Van Markhams, who've been quiet lately on account of they were trying to negotiate peace.
Funny that, seeing as we've learned from the Van Markhams it was Aurelia Pentaghast what sold out Perendale to the Vints, only so she could stage some heroics for the desperate masses and win back their favor.

Van Markhams are being arrested in the capital, but have managed to attack one of the Pentaghast palaces, power to them.

So polish your boots up, you lot, we've got a civil war at last.

NOTES: as per this ooc post

( There’s a moment of pause in between the message starting and Herian beginning to speak. Certainly she sounds as calm and steady as ever, but there is a weighted seriousness that is not always present. )

Thank you to everyone who voted on how we should proceed, and articulated their concerns and queries regarding whether or not our base here should become independent of the Inquisition, and if so, what shape our ongoing relationship with the Inquisition, the Chantry and their allies might take. Excellent points were made, and matters raised that granted each of us the opportunity to reflect on those matters and ensure we proceeded with appropriate care and consideration. Ultimately this needed to be a matter not decided by the Division Heads alone, but by our base altogether. Each of you who let their voice be heard has my gratitude.

We have tallied all of our votes, and found that the majority of the Kirkwall outpost has voted to become an allied force with the Inquisition, similar to the position held by many other groups who, for various reasons, are not under the direct command of Skyhold or Her Holiness, but still loyally serve in the war effort.

Based on this outcome, we have engaged with the leadership in Skyhold, and representatives from her Holiness, Divine Beatrix, and are happy to report that we will continue to work alongside them and have a positive relationship, but with greater freedoms than we might have otherwise possessed in our decision making.

What this means:

Forces gathered at Skyhold have joined the Exalted March against the Imperium. Our resources will shrink accordingly — but we are not bereft, and you will not go without pay.

Arrangements between the city of Kirkwall and this outpost have not altered. We may occupy the Gallows until such a point as we imperil it. Do not test that goodwill.

Our priorities and initiatives remain, though their organization may shift. To the position of Ambassador, Provost, [ et al ] I bid you think us liaisons with the Exalted body. You may continue to direct questions of upkeep to the Seneschal.

Those wishing to accompany Her Holiness’ forces will find the ferry intact.

[ so nut up or shut up ]

Our goal has not changed. We work first and foremost to defeat Corypheus and his allies, and we cannot let this change distract or slow our efforts. All of your work assignments remain the same, so please raise any questions you might have now, and then let's all get back about our business.

Hello. This is-- Salvio Pizzicagnolo, seneschal to the Inquisition's base in Kirkwall and Head of Base Operations. And we--uh, the Inquisition, that is--well, we have always lived in times of. [He winces.] Um, stress. To put it lightly. That is chief among the Inquisition's work. And, and it has been decided that we will--well, in light of the, uh. The larger threats. Monthly news will be shared and--and an edited version will be written in the Compendium. As a test of its--security. Not necessarily its longevity.

Um, Base Operations will be responsible for reading, um, will disperse--well, I will, I will just begin. For Kingsway:

[He clears his throat, and there is the audible rustle of a paper being shook into order. And when Salvio begins reading, he sounds much more assured than he ever does while speaking of his own accord:]

In Tevinter, there-- A new man occupies the Archon's throne and palace in Minrathous, but word is that the Imperial Senate is less certain about what has happened. A meeting of the Magisterium has been called to take place in Harvestmere--in Vyrantium, an unprecedented necessity--in order to take stock of the situation and rule upon it. Given the Magisterium's power to appoint an Archon if there is no approved heir (and Radonis, far from failing, had not yet announced one publicly), this development is not likely to make supposed Archon Ilrian Amladaris and his supporters very happy.

From Nevar-- Nevarra City, that is--reports have traveled rapidly that King Markus Pentaghast has fallen ill, likely for the last time. Though the aged king reportedly still clings to life, reports indicate him to be insensible, or at least unable to carry out his duties. His brother Ferdinand has reluctantly stepped in as regent. Elsewhere, his niece Aurelia Pentaghast is said to be quietly rallying supporters to make a push to take Ferdinand's place if she is not named heir. The court is on a-- [Mm, a poetic turn here, who wrote this, and Salvio's tone cools slightly as he reads] --"knife's edge" as the moment to finally choose a side looms. The Van Markhams, likely banking on the distraction of their rivals, have finally made the move they have been threatening for months, riding out in force to take the royal outpost at Onavign and laying siege to the town of Dornfeld, strategically located along the Imperial Highway south of the Minanter, where they might control traffic between Nevarra City and Cumberland.

From Markham, the Chantry's ruling that Rifters are not demons was made with little fanfare, but has caused a stir regardless. While many choose to follow the edict--if often, um, "grudgingly", that's, that's what it says--not all consider that matter closed, especially without a Divine to make the ruling. Several prominent scholars have attacked the legitimacy of this decision in lectures and papers, and are now said to be organizing an event at the University of Markham to gather like-minded scholars and clerics.

And finally, from Val Royeaux: the invasion of Orlais by the Anderfels and the situation in Tevinter have prompted renewed more urgent calls for a Divine who might be able to unite the faithful against the threat more successfully than the still-controversial Inquisition. Despite that controversy, the College of Clerics has reportedly reached out to the Inquisition's prominent--reached out to, um, Cassandra Pentaghast and Leliana--as candidates--but, also reportedly, have been rebuffed by both, as they are unwilling to leave the Inquisition while Corypheus remains a threat.

So-- [Salvio clears his throat again, and there's a second audible rustle.] That is, um. There. Yes. That will be-- that's, uh, all. For now. Please direct concerns to the-- the appropriate divisions so that they can be appropriately addressed.

And if any member of Base Operations would, uh. Well. This task, of reading monthly the news, will be-- will be assigned. To someone interested. Or of course I might continue to read.

Thank you.

[The version in the Compendium Book is mostly black lines, with a few adjectives and coordinating conjunctions left in place like marooned orphans. Someday when security is better, maybe we can all enjoy written news.]

WAR OF THE LIONS RAGES ON

Orlesians remain mired in civil war but still make time for a party! The Orlesians continue to squabble amongst themselves, but have perhaps finally noticed that there are larger threats currently facing Thedas. A summit has been scheduled for late Firstfall, in hopes of ending the conflict that for over a year has inflamed the empire and wrought havoc on world trade. Empress Celene and her even more unlikeable cousin Grand Duke Gaspard will both attend the negotiations, which of course are being held at an elaborate and decadent ball, because even in the midst of war Orlesians still have their priorities.

The event will proceed despite the recent arrest of its hostess, Gaspard's sister Grand Duchess Florianne. She has been imprisoned by the Inquisition on charges of conspiring with Corypheus, which somehow has still not ended her brother's bid for the throne. We hear the Inquisition will be in attendance at this event to provide mediation and additional security, and we can only hope they intend upon arresting the Grand Duke as well. Maybe they'll even arrest them all! We shall cross our fingers. In the meantime, the war continues, with reports of thousands dead in the barren trench-land of the Dales, and hundreds more fled into the woods to join the rebels who call themselves the Freemen of the Dales. Should either would-be leader emerge from this party in control, they'll find themselves with a bigger clean up job than a kennel-hand after the dogs get into bad meat.

ARCHDEMON DRIVEN FROM HOSSBERG

Wardens Save Hossberg! The archdemon that recently terrorized Hossberg has fled following the arrival of the Grey Wardens. The people of the Anderfels welcomed these heroes into the capital city with music and jubilation.

First Warden swears vengeance! The bodies of the entire royal family of the Anderfels have been found torn apart by darkspawn. The First Warden has sworn they will be avenged, and declared that the throne will pass to the closest known heir of the family when order has been restored to the region and the transition of power can be made peacefully.

CHAOS CONTINUES PLAGUING FERELDEN'S EMBATTLED QUEEN

Queen Anora crippled by indecision! A new rift has opened in Crestwood, plaguing the citizens of the region with more troubles. Many have seen no choice but to abandon their homesteads and flee to larger cities that offer greater defense. Queen Anora has issued a royal decree that these refugees will be well-treated, but has failed to match her intentions with funding, leaving cityfolk feeling neglected and overtaxed by what is asked of them. Indeed, the influx of refugees has added considerable burden to the magistrates of Ferelden’s great cities, and citizens and nobles alike fear a time as dark as Fifth Blight, when cities like Kirkwall were full to bursting and danger stalked the streets. Pressure on Anora grows, while Ferelden prays for the return of King Jonas, that he might share the burden of the crown. In these darker days, these prayers turn similarly dark, and many hope that that the King might at the very least be declared dead once and for all, so that the Queen might remarry and a true strength might return to Ferelden.

ROUCHLANDS RESCUED FROM TRAITOROUS SERVANTS

A harrowing crisis was bravely resolved by a troop of brave and lawful citizens in the southern Dales, who rescued the Rouchand family from their own household staff. Madame Giesella Rouchand, the Lady de Papin (her sister by marriage), and the two Rouchand sons suffered great terror at the hands of those elves in whom the family had long placed their trust. The little family was locked in their own suites at the Manor de Rouchand while Lord Rouchand was away on matters of the state. The Rouchands were, blessed be the Maker, saved from worse horrors by the intrepid band of young men from the neighboring estates, who rose up in arms and outrage when they heard news of the plight of the Rouchands. The thankless servants did not cause grievous harm to the Rouchand estate, and have been imprisoned for the good of all. The youngest Rouchand son, Emile, has begged mercy for the insurgent bunch, on the grounds that they are witless, without the good judgement afforded to those more clever. Lord Rouchand has returned to his estate to be with his family at this difficult time. The Rouchands are recovering admirably after their scare. And while there is not yet word of punishment, no one would blame Lord Rouchand should he call for a swift and sure justice in the name of the Empress and Orlais herself. Examples must be made, or else further incidents are likely.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS

As the seasons change and the war rages on, the fashion houses of Orlais have followed suit, incorporating austere tints to their designs. Darker colors reign supreme. Gone are the light linens of summer, overtaken by deep supple leathers, wools cut in clean crisp lines of uniformity, all whimsically offset by riffs of feathers. Embroidered detail relies on the motif of purple flowers. This is the fashionable way to display support for the Empress Celene, for it is always in vogue to wish the Empress a long life and a prosperous reign!

But, lo! The most fashionable of all is King Bhelen, who, while he has not yet taken to wearing the purple flower, is surely commissioning its addition to his royal garb at this very moment. For Bhelen has sent aid to Celene in this dark hour! The relief in Val Royeaux at so noble a gesture was, by all reports, palpable, as the true sons and daughters of Orlais toasted Bhelen’s deeply fashionable generosity.

Rumors of disappearances from Mont-de-Glace have been confirmed as truth, as the Vicomtesse has sent an official request to her brother-in-law for aid. Citizens of the region have been disappearing, waylaid by bandits or worse.

A village just south of the Frostbacks was decimated by an Abomination. Only four children escaped with their lives, smuggled to safety by Arnaldus, a brave brother of the Chantry who was traveling in the region. It was Brother Arnaldus who bore the story to the Templars. The Abomination was put down and the remains of the village were burned.

The cooperative efforts of Nevarra and Tevinter is reaching legendary proportions as the two countries are combating the insidious Venatori presence entrenched along their shared border.

The Anderfels

CORRUPT WARDENS MURDER KING WILHELM AUGUSTIN

The Grey Wardens have finally shown their true colors, seizing power in the Anderfels in a violent coup that left the royal family and many others dead. The First Warden now holds Hossberg in an iron grip, imposing martial law on the terrified populus with the help of a demon army and an archdemon dragon that circles above the city. Some brave Anders attempted to resist the usurpers, even setting fire to the Warden stronghold of Weisshaupt, but were soundly defeated by the Wardens and their demonic allies. The number of dead is estimated to be in the scores if not hundreds, and may soon climb if the Wardens turn their eyes--and their army--to their neighbors next.

WARDENS SAVE ANDERFELS FROM ARCHDEMON

The appearance of an archdemon over the Ander capital of Hossberg has forced the Grey Wardens to take drastic measures, heroically taking over defense of the nation in the face of this unprecedented attack. With the hapless King--better known for prayer than military prowess--paralyzed by fear and indecision, First Warden Vidar and his contingent of Wardens took it upon themselves to lead the army and the city guard in safeguarding the people against imminent threat. A faction of demon-worshippers in Weisshaupt attempted to sabotage the Wardens and flee in the face of the archdemon's arrival, but were prevented from doing any significant damage by the quick actions of the Wardens stationed there under the direction of Warden-Commander Clarel.

Orlais

EMPRESS CONTINUES PUSH AGAINST USURPER

The war between Empress Celene Valmont and treacherous usurper Grand Duke Gaspard shows no signs of waning in the Dales. The Empress' army has halted the Grand Duke's rebel force in the Exalted Plains, where his marauding men have sent a flood of refugees in search of safer shelter. Fortunately, the increased stability and reopened roads brought by the Inquisition's presence in nearby Emprise du Lion have provided an escape route. The Empire has expressed its gratitude for the Inquisition's assistance during this trying time.

RIGHTFUL HEIR MAKES HEADWAY

Renowned Chevalier and Hero of Orlais Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons continues his struggle to free Orlais from the greedy grip of the weak-hearted Celene Valmont. Though he has lamented being forced to fight his countrymen instead of the doglords to the east, the Empire's most skilled and experienced general continues to lead his force in battle, making a valiant stand near Verchiel. The so-called Empress has suffered a rash of deserters from her dwindling forces who have fled into the Dales in the west rather than continue to serve her. These desperate fellows have been left to harass travelers and merchants along the roads completely unchecked, as Celene continues to force every conscript she can muster to the front in the Exalted Plains in a futile attempt to delay Gaspard's relentless advance.

VICIOUS ELVEN CONSPIRACY UNMASKED

In Val Firmin, three elves have been executed for conspiring to kill their employer, Baroness Vantoir. The lady's household guard were investigating reports of theft when they recovered encoded messages and a vial of poison being passed between members of her household staff. None of the convicts expressed even a scrap of remorse, and at the gallows the housemaid began raving and exhorting others to violence before she was mercifully silenced by the rope.
