Good evening, everyone. My name is Josephine Montilyet and I am the Ambassador for the Inquisition. I've not had the pleasure of meeting as many of you as would like personally, so... I thought this might be an easier, more - ah - approachable way of getting to know each other better.

( She clears her throat as though to prevent herself from rambling. )

I must confess I do not know where to start. Perhaps a conversational ice-breaker will have to do. ( So much for not rambling. ) What do you miss most about your life before the Inquisition?

Their skill is superb, but spices aside, the best ingredients for their dishes are hard to keep fresh when they have to make it all the way down south and them up the damn mountains to reach us. There probably isn't much we can do about that, unless you can think of something.

You're kind to say so, thank you.

I would love to see more variety in the stacks; more of Genitivi's works, more publications from the University of Orlais, anything beyond what is already available. I've nothing against all the Chantry-centric works, but a greater variety can only benefit us.

I haven't had a home in a long time so I'm not sure about other comforts but I sure miss not sleeping on the ground or in an itchy cot. I'm too young for back trouble but here we are.

Oh, that much before the Inquisition?

[It's out before he realizes the other meaning the words can have, and he hastily continues:]

I'm not... You're not old, that's not what I'm saying. I thought you meant literally before getting to Skyhold. Life was far easier when I was eleven.

Aye, I've faith that without me there to keep an eye on them, the Doctor and Zoe'll be right up to their necks in trouble.

[Which is...not what she meant, and something a touch more apologetic comes into his voice as he continues.]

Sorry. I get what you meant. They're the two most clever people I know, and they'll be alright. It's just hard sometimes to know they're off fighting Cybermen or Ice Warriors and I can't be there to help them.

My specialities do not lie in the storage of food, I'm afraid. ( And bless her soul, she actually sounds disappointed. ) But perhaps I will be able to find someone. ( She puts that on her list of ideas to investigate further. )

What about the spices? Are they adequate?

The current state of the library probably too accurately reflects the origins of the Inquisition, yes. ( The words come out a bit more drily than she intended. )

I shall see what I can do to go about getting more of the books you mentioned. Now that I think about it, there is an esteemed librarian back home who owes me a favour. I'm sure he can be persuaded into making a donation to the Inquisition...

( She smiles at that, even though it cannot be seen over the crystal. )

( While she can understand Bethany's brother not being much of a letter-writer (Maker knows Josephine's own are hopeless) the next part of the other woman's statement confuses Josephine. )

( She agrees readily, with a light trace of mirth: ) It is not impossible.

What is it that differentiates the wine from your home from that of our world's?

( That's a sad story, Josephine thinks, but does not say. She doesn't want to add to Avery's burdens. )

Have you heard from your mother recently?

( Ah, another adventurer, then. )

If it would be of any help, I have a small collection of cut-off fabrics and scraps that might be of use to make your bedding more comfortable.

( She's going to pretend that at least half of that made sense to her, for both their sakes. As it stands, she cannot help but tease him a little: )

It sounds like you think you're missing out on the fun.

( She cannot help but laugh at his hasty recovery. )

I did think that you would know better than to comment on a lady's age.

( But mostly, she wants a few things from this discussion: suggestions for improvements to the Inquisition; people's perceptions of how the Mage-Templar war has affected their lives.

I find it hard to picture you as an eleven-year-old.

( She laughs. )

I miss cities too, Varric. But for the better or the worse, Leliana is very convincing.

[Honestly, Avery's not sure why she included that detail? She doesn't often discuss that sort of thing...]

She writes. Sometimes I write back. She's a lot better at it than I am.

( Sometimes, it just slips out when people need to say it most. )

She must miss you. My mother is much the same way.

( Yes, even though letter-writing is one of Josephine's specialities. )

Kind of hard to picture.

Not hard to picture that your mum would miss you. Obviously, she would do that. Just that yours and mine would be much alike at all, yeah?

Er... That still sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? [Andraste's tits, Avery, get your foot out of your mouth immediately!!] It wasn't meant to. Sorry, uh, ma'am.

( Josephine cannot help but laugh, but it isn't intended as malicious at all. )

Even though we both come from different backgrounds, I believe your mother and mine might have more in common that you might think.

A great deal being at stake might be considered the natural state of Thedas, considering the past decade.

( Not combative, more just... an observation. )
