A question of great importance: who is the most interesting person in Riftwatch?

I am composing a list, which I very easily could make alone. But that is not amusing. So, the winner of the list will of course receive a prize. An extra point will be awarded to a Rifter, quite obviously. Points deducted for, hm, [totally at random here,] let us say.... Wardens. I have nothing against them. Once I admired them! Then I had my sixth birthday, and I grew bored with them.

All suggestions will be considered.

Edgard, new recruit. Before you ask, I’m not particularly interesting, of either sort.

That sounds quite like the sort of thing someone who wished to be unknown would say, when in fact he was very interesting but disguising it. And is not 'interesting' a relative concept, besides?

Suppose so. As it happens, who are you?

Ah, your pardon. I am Valentine Nicasus Maxence Mérovée Olivier de Foncé. Most usually called Val. Scholar, researcher, member of the Research department of Riftwatch, and so on. And yourself?

[A long pause and then a humph]

That’s a lot of names, Val. Like I said, Edgard, just the one name. I’m in Forces.

Yes, it was your affiliation that I was after. Forces. I would say that is not so surprising to me. The timbre of your voice suggests it of you. Yet I remain impressed.

Your voice suggests a few things as well. What is it you research?

I would think its first suggestion is that I am Orlesian.

But how good of you to ask. My scholarship is primarily in the fields of zoology, archaeology and anthropology, demolitions, and architecture, and then particularly the architecture and construction of siege engines. And of course I also research nearly [an important word here] whatever Riftwatch asks of me.

[A lot of names and a lot of words, but not the ones Edgard's looking for.]

You intend to shirk responsibility?

[A short inhale and then an uncomfortable laugh]

What responsibility are you accusing me of shirking?

Well, my friend, if we are speaking by these crystals, then you are a member of our company. And you are honor-bound to help in its efforts. And this-- [unofficially, but that is so unimportant, relaly, if you just leave that part out, no one ever knows] --this is an effort of our company. To abandon it without genuine suggestion is to shirk.

[Flatly.]

[Val gives a very professional and grown-up raspberry sound in reply. ok]
