Magic is dreadfully stigmatized here. And it's quite dangerous, as well. Mages spend their lives learning to control it. It's not like picking up a mop and broom.

Right. Then asking them to clean is rather like asking you to pick up a hammer and build a shelf, because surely engineers ought to be brilliant at that sort of thing. And also the hammer might turn you into a monster that kills the people around you.
