Inquisition! We have for you a list of nominees for your Satinalia Fools. We say Fools, plural, because we have many fine nominees and two crowns - we think they may be crowns. We removed them from the heads of statues in some temple or another. Perhaps they were symbols of shame rather than nobility? None of us is qualified to say, but the statues were very small compared to some others, and - [ an abrupt end to the rambling ] - we will assume they are close enough to crowns to crown Fools. Valentine has been testing them and looks very Foolish.

Two Fools, then. If they cannot cooperate we will give each one half of the courtyard during the festivities and they may, éventuellement, stage a battle between their kingdoms.

We have placed a box outside the tavern where you can place the name of the nominee you wish to support. Please only choose once. The Maker does not endorse cheating. If you do not believe in the Maker then whatever you do believe in likely does not endorse cheating, either, though, again, none of us is qualified to say. If you believe in a god that does endorse cheating, please find it in your own heart to practice restraint.

Ah! You are right! I had forgotten that not all would be aware of my status as royalty!

It's probably because you're so friendly. You don't put on airs or act like people should treat you as better than they are.

This was how I ruled as well. If a King is not one of his people then how can he hope to rule them?

Oh, I'm sure he'd think of a way. It wouldn't be a good way, but he probably wouldn't care. I like your method, though.

Bah. That is not what being a King truly is. Better to be the King who will fight with his people and laugh with them and cry with them. So it pleases me that you approve of how I ruled.

Your people were very lucky to have you.

Ah, perhaps we should expand tradition and allow our Kings or Queens of Fools to select a King or Queen to rule beside them.

[ He doesn't actually wiggle his eyebrows, but it's in his voice. ]

Oh, I wouldn't want to mess with tradition. But perhaps you could put it to a vote.

Does a queen often ask to be voted for?

Does it matter if your friend just said you might "expand tradition?" It sounds like he's willing to make exceptions.

Very true. We do hate tradition. It makes us sick.

What will you wear for your crown, o queen?

[serannas]

[ She exhales a laugh. ]

If I had a crown, it would be woven of flowers.

[degenere]

How charming that would look. I used to make crowns of flowers for my brother. He was often stung by bees. It was very sad.

But what is the most foolish flower?

[serannas]

Oh, you're putting me on the spot.

[ And she can't think of anything witty. Drat. ]

I can't think of one off the top of my head. What about you?

[Of course, Val is prepared with an answer off the top of his head:]

In Orlais, at the edge of the Arbor Wilds, there is a flower that grows called oeil de poupée. Have you heard of this flower? It is the most foolish, by far.

[serannas]

[ But of course. ]

I can't say I have. What does it look like?

[degenere]

Eyes, mademoiselle.

[serannas]

Eyes?

[ She laughs. ]

Is that to scare animals away who would eat it?

[degenere]

Perhaps! But I think it is to terrify us. The Maker put such flowers in the world to make us think that perhaps, if we are very bad, our eyes will be divinely snatched from our heads and fastened to the stalks of flowers and plants.

At least, that's what my mother told me, may she stay at rest in her final peace. Whenever she does me the favor of dying.

In any case: this is what I would use to make a fool's flower crown. And the tufted tops of some carrot. And, oh-- mint, I suppose.
