Inquisition! We have for you a list of nominees for your Satinalia Fools. We say Fools, plural, because we have many fine nominees and two crowns - we think they may be crowns. We removed them from the heads of statues in some temple or another. Perhaps they were symbols of shame rather than nobility? None of us is qualified to say, but the statues were very small compared to some others, and - [ an abrupt end to the rambling ] - we will assume they are close enough to crowns to crown Fools. Valentine has been testing them and looks very Foolish.

Two Fools, then. If they cannot cooperate we will give each one half of the courtyard during the festivities and they may, éventuellement, stage a battle between their kingdoms.

We have placed a box outside the tavern where you can place the name of the nominee you wish to support. Please only choose once. The Maker does not endorse cheating. If you do not believe in the Maker then whatever you do believe in likely does not endorse cheating, either, though, again, none of us is qualified to say. If you believe in a god that does endorse cheating, please find it in your own heart to practice restraint.

It may be, on Satinalia. Only for the day. On any other day we would, of course, judge and shame them appropriately.

Satina--[She's pronouncing it to herself.] I think I've heard of it before in talk. It's one of your holidays, right? A holiday where being stupid is good?

I would not like to call anyone we may crown stupid, non—they may be very clever in their foolishness.

Just so. Take Valentine—one of the cleverest men I have met! Yet often foolish, either in jest, to entertain, or because being clever does not make one—ah. [ He didn't mean to end this way. But here they are. ] Foolproof.

What is so wrong with recognizing the fools? Fools bring us a great many things!

[ She sounds amused by this tradition, as long as no one is truly upset over being nominated. And it doesn't sound like he is. ]

A fool is usually one with imagination greater than all others. They create and provide new insight for us. Perhaps for what not to do but also for what can be done if there is nothing to hold them back.

Did everyone suddenly decide 'fool' has a different meaning or what, because that's usually an insult, like where I'm from.

Anything can be an insult if you allow it to be. Words only have power if one gives them that power.

Of course! It seems like a great deal of fun to be crowned a King of Fools.

Aye, well, not so sure fun'd be the word I choose.

You seem awfully keen on the notion, though, so maybe I'm missing something you're not. You really think this'll be a good thing?

Hm? Why should it not be a good thing? It seems a fine way of bringing smiles and some joy to the people here for a time.

Generally celebrations involve something worth celebrating. Is this some kind of opposite day festival? What is Satinalia? What is this a celebration or holiday or what-have-you about?
