So, question time. I think it's finally time to get a tattoo, and I'm interested in references to a tattoo artist, if you know any. The closer to Skyhold the better...though actually, Antiva City would also do, because reasons. Anywhere within the Inquisition's reach is fine; I'm not in a huge rush, but...it's time, and I want to consider options.

Or you can just tell me about your tattoos and what meaning they have for you. I'm always interested in that sort of thing. If you're planning to get one, whether you have any now or not, that counts too.

My mother gave me my vallaslin when I was 15. By not making any noise when I received the tattoo, it represented that I was ready to enter adulthood, and that I can handle the pain it brings. My particular tattoo represents Sylaise, the hearthkeeper.

But...I don't think any of that really applies for your needs. Um. Sorry.

If you flinch you aren't worthy of adulthood. Beleth is too stubborn for that.

Well, that's the Dalish for you. We aren't meant to do anything half way.

The potential embarrassment of walking around with a half-finished vallaslin would have been worse than the pain was.

It's not...common. You spent a lot of time meditating and preparing for it, so most people are aware of whether they're ready or not. But yes, if they cry out, then the Keeper might decide that they're not ready, and they'll try again once they're a little more prepared for adulthood.

I was going to say, I don't remember seeing any Dalish with half-finished vallaslin in the camps we visited. At least they get another chance later, though I can't imagine it'd be easy to wait until then.

I'll be happy to show it off once it's done. I have ideas for others in mind, too, but this one gets to be first.

No, I imagine not. But as far as your tattoos go, I would love to see it, when it's finished. Or any of them, when you get more.

A sea dragon is going to happen, because of course it is, but I think I'll let them heal one at a time. I don't even know where I'd put it yet.

When you live in the wilderness you have to be strong, you have to endure. You can't flinch when a mad bear is raging down on your hunting party, or when bandits think your Clan makes a good target. Not responding to the pain of the blood writing shows you're ready.

That sounds... rough, but for that kind of life I suppose such things have to be. For me growing up was based on how you reacted in a situation.

Well I haven't been a child for a while, but if we were going by those rules I'd be a very big kid. I more then flinched when Ellana came at me as a honey badger.

Well, it's a good things humans are considered men for different reasons. I definitely don't want to think of you as a kid.

They are taken as signs of weakness, and the Keeper might decide that you're not ready to become an adult.

Yes. It's...fairly embarrassing for the Dalish in question, as you might imagine.

I can only imagine. At least they can try again. It would probably be worse if that wasn't an option.
