Something...ostentatious? [ That's just another subjective thing, though. Dang. ]

Something far outside how hats normally appear, something that is impractical as an actual hat, and serves more as a fashion statement than an article of clothing. Like--if it's a very big hat with a great deal of beads and ribbons.

Does that make sense?

Fashion often denotes social status and cultural function. It could be considered a practical function of the hat.
