NOTES: If anyone wants to assume past CR, even if it's just acquaintances or vaguely knowing about each other, it's all good with me. (Especially fellow Grey Wardens or Orlesians from noble families).

[The voice that speaks has a light Orlesian accent, it’s definitely something which he couldn’t ever entirely get rid of over the years. He also sounds deeply annoyed. Seriously, he comes here with such good intentions and this is how he’s treated? Sigh. Sometimes he questions his entire life path.]

Is this how you greet everyone who joins the Inquisition? By acting as if you've seen a demon? [To be fair, there was only the one person who'd screamed 'demon' and fled fast. Most people who’d given him odd looks had taken a second glance, then shrugged and moved on, and in a couple cases they even apologized for some sort of ‘mistake’ they’d made. It's apparently clear enough to them that he's not who they thought he was. Still, the more annoying incidents stand out.] I’ve a terrible feeling I’m being put through some sort of initiation ritual. Believe me, I had my fill of such things when joining the Grey Wardens.

For those I haven’t met, my name is Kain Ventfort, and I’ve just come from Griffon Wing Keep to add to your warrior forces. I’ve been looking for a better challenge than I’ve had lately. I’m told I’ll find what I’m seeking here. [Redemption. He’s seeking redemption, and he’s also seeking answers to a very specific problem, but those aren't things he’s about to address in public.] Perhaps even an encounter with a High Dragon someday? What I wouldn't give to see one of them up close...

[There's familiar barking on the other end of the sending crystal, and a moment later, Inessa's surprised but not unwelcoming voice.]

Kain? It's good to hear from you again! I was wondering if you'd ever join us.

[Excuse her while she puts off the awkwardness of explanations for just one moment.]

Inessa... I was hoping I'd find you soon enough. You as well, Garahel.

[He pauses a moment. How to explain his presence here? At least he's known to travel, any chance he gets, so there's that.]

I know I said I'd prefer to stay in the Western Approach, but... I figured I would brave the cold after all. I needed a change of scenery sooner than I realized.

I'm glad of it. We'll definitely need you here. Where are you now?

My sword is always ready. I'm exploring the ramparts currently, getting my share of fresh, cold air. Impressive view, though.

We're in the library, though we'll join you. Garahel will be too excitable to remain quiet now.

Yelling 'demon' at people does seem to be a fairly common occurrence.

[What fun. Though, as annoying as it was, he knows the whole incident was totally harmless. Just... a bit weird.]

I'm not certain that more demon yelling is a good thing, Simply a frequent one. But you're welcome. We've a rather nice setup, all things considered.

Do we have a demon problem here? It seems relatively safe, very well guarded from what I've seen. I don't doubt there's plenty out there to deal with, though...

No more than the usual, really. There are simply some deluded corners who are convinced that rifters are demons, and we've more rifters than anywhere else. As far as I know, we've most of them.

[Don't mind the completely deadpan Ferelden. He's an asshole.]

[It's all good, Kain is just as willing to give the snark back too.]

So terrifying that I think I'd rather take my chances with the demons. Which I'm not, by the way. To clarify.

[He's convinced by now that the demon thing was a joke from someone far too drunk at this hour.]

Yeah, in my experience demons don't bother responding with sarcasm. They go straight to the flesh ripping and all that good stuff.

[He's wondering why people think he's a demon, but hey. That's nosy.]

Did they put you through the Grey Warden initiation in your smallclothes? Because I heard that's sometimes a thing.

Yes. That's it. The true secret behind how we join the Wardens.

[Give him a moment here, it's been a while, a couple years, maybe? Though it doesn't take him long to place who that voice belongs to. Funny how they keep running into each other.]

Korrin? How in the Maker's name did you come to be here of all places?

You heard about the Temple of Sacred Ashes, right? Some of my company where there when it blew up.

I wouldn't put it past you.

[Yes, he definitely has gotten used to Korrin, even though their paths only cross at random.]

I'm sorry to hear of that... So you joined the Inquisition for... what, a sense of closure?

I did it to kill Corypheus, of course. That's the only closure I need or want. I even saw him, too, but then he had to go and destroy Haven. Skyhold's a lot more defensible, though. We'll do alright here.

There may be an expedition to seek out a dragon, in fact. If you are really interested and know of the dangers, then you're welcome to join us.

[To say he's interested is a definite understatement. Kain is instantly hooked on this idea.]

I would like that. Dragons are my specialty... I've studied and fought them, so I know what to expect. [Not a High Dragon yet, but only because of their rarity.] Where are you thinking of going, on this expedition?

I have no interest in fighting them. If you mean to slay them, then I would prefer you stay behind.

[ Her tone is a little cool. Wary. ]

However, study is another matter. [ beat ] I haven't determined an exact location yet; I am not of Thedas and do not know its lands as well as some.

[That's definitely unexpected. Though when she mentions not being of Thedas, that explains it. Around fellow natives, he needs to keep his true draconic interests on the down low, keep certain details of his heritage to himself.]

Then I won't fight them, you have my word. [Dragon-slaying is something he'll do if the need arises, a way of challenging and proving himself against an opponent he greatly respects. Sometimes it's inevitable. But... his interest in them goes beyond that.] That's... [His voice lowers just a moment to finish that sentence:] actually the last thing I want. If our purpose is observation and study, I'm even more interested in your expedition. I've been fascinated by draconology my entire life. You might call it a family tradition.

Oh? Is it within your family trade to study dragons?

[ Once she hears of some of his own experiences, she'll admit to her own, very personal connection with the species. ]
