a friendly wager

FORM: Sending crystal as well as notices in the Tavern + Great Hall.
SENDER: Thranduil
RECIPIENT: All the Inquisition!
WHAT: Thranduil issues a challenge.
WHEN: First of Bloomingtide, contest itself set on 8th Bloomingtide
WHERE: Skyhold.
NOTES: Possibly fixed contests, Thranduil trolling for allies. See notes!

[ thranduil sends his message later in the afternoon, his polite, deep voice precise and careful as he first greets, then settles down to the mear of the matter: ]

Good afternoon. I am Thranduil, a rifter, arrived last month. [ he pauses, to catch the attention of whomever might have their crystal nearby. ] I seek to return the hospitality shown to my son and I. I propose an archery contest, open to all residents of Skyhold. For the winner, fifty crowns. The next-best, twenty, and the third- ten.

[ where did he get the money? who knows shh. ]

Those interested should come to treeline in the valley on the eighth of Bloomingtide at noon.

[ he stops, as if he might be finished, but then: ]

And further, if anyone finds themselves able to beat my son, Legolas, I will offer them their choice of ring from my fingers. [ he sounds, already, terribly amused. ]

((ooc: SO this is mostly for thranduil and legolas to court allies. people are free to challenge him in an attempt to win a ring! but it is legolas shooting so. the money prizes will be rng'd.))

[Varric is trying not to tip his hand here, but he can't stifle himself before a surprised laugh bursts out of him. He reins it in quickly, but it already happened.]

Uh--no, 'fraid that's not how we run contests here.

I mean, the picking a target and both shooting part? Yeah, that's pretty run of the mill, but unless your people mark birds and use them for practice? You're probably going to have to up your game a bit.

[Unless you really want to see how many arrows everyone can split in a row...which, actually, might be a fun contest but is also one that he'd have a leg up on.]

I'll make a target launcher for you. I'm sure there's enough gear to whip one of those up before the event.

[And, as an apology because he doesn't generally like laughing at people, Varric adds:]

You may also want to consider blindfolds.

Custom?

[He'd just made that suggestion because, in all fairness, there's a reason Sera and he aren't allowed to compete...but, as nice a dwarf as Varric is, he's not that nice.]

Oh, I think anything will do, really. I don't suggest plaidweave but, really, when does anyone?

So, mid-morning on the eighth? I'll bring the elaborate target machines, you bring the refreshments, and we'll all show off until we run out of arrows? Sounds good?
