um, hello? [the voice is very soft and nervous at first.]
Pardon my anxiousness, I'm, ah, not used to this kind of communication being so... open?
I was told I'd need a staff and some guidance in order to use my own magic properly here. The general outlook on mages, however, has me doubting if devoting the time is a good idea or if I should focus my efforts elsewhere. However, if it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be in my head, and someone were interested and able in assisting me, I'd be happy to discuss fair compensation for your time.
Also, upon some recent reflection, I suppose I should offer myself up to one of the divisions of Riftwatch - not Diplomacy though, I'm not equipped for that.

Riftwatch is mostly cool with it, though.

Anyone I should avoid discussing or using magic around?
no subject
Uh, nobody I've met yet has been an asshole about it. Here, anyway. Just try to keep it on the down-low out in Kirkwall if you're not using it to defend yourself.
no subject
Ah, alright. I wasn't sure since you said "mostly cool" but I will keep that in mind.
no subject
I'm Ellie.
Can you do anything other than magic?
no subject
Allumin. I know how to wield a rapier and I'm okay at throwing daggers. [Just okay, he needs to practice his aim more.] I'm okay with them at close range too, but I'm not exactly battle-hardened so I prefer not getting too close to danger if I can help it.
no subject
[Ellie what.]
Never seen anybody use a rapier. You a pirate on the side or something?
no subject
No, [well... no, actually, no, you have to have been on a boat at least once for that.] of the one-handed bladed weapons you can choose from, I happened to think it looked the best while also using magic...
[It's not the best reason, but. Squishy wizard.]
no subject
Not the worst reason I've heard.
You can probably scratch Forces off your list too. Unless you're a really heavy hitter with magic?
no subject
Probably not heavy enough. If I had to venture into potential danger then Scouting would probably be best - I do even have some spells that would be useful for such a thing - but I'm not particularly experienced with stealth. [And not usually dressed for it either.]
no subject
[Not exactly glamorous, but it translated in other areas.]
I mean, there's different kinds of Scouts. Some overlap with Forces, some with Diplomacy, some with Research. We do a little of everything.
no subject
Well, an overlap between Scouting and Research maybe wouldn't be bad. Research is [fuck you astarion, especially for being 100% right about him right off the bat] pretty much what I did back home, but because of having some skills better suited outside of an office it seems like it might be a waste to commit wholly to the Research division alone.
no subject
Hnnh. [Just a tiny pause here.] You could do what I do and join your main division, then team up with people when you need their skills or they need yours.
no subject
That is a good point. [Team up... teamwork. Even having been in an adventuring party before, it is not exactly his strong suit. A sigh.] Which division are you in?
no subject
I'm over in Scouting. It was a toss-up between that and Forces, but I'm not exactly soldier material.
[... that might be an understatement.]
no subject
Knowing one's own limits is important, [he says, in a way that is more directed at himself than outwardly.] And oh, right, you did say "we" earlier, didn't you? My mistake, I was a bit lost in my own head there.
Do you enjoy it - or well, is it at least - interesting? Sorry, that's probably an awkward question to ask and answer regarding gathering intelligence and such during a war and such a thing shouldn't matter because the work is necessary, but... [He can't really think of any good follow up to what he's saying.]
no subject
And yeah, it is. To me, anyway. I don't mind libraries but I'm better at field work, y'know? Even the stuff that sounds boring usually turns out at least a little crazy.
no subject
Does that happen often with Rifters? I mean, I've been to a few different planes of existence in my home world but they were still, uhm, connected.
Also, I can understand how that goes. [Things definitely were not boring when he returned from the Void.]
no subject
[It gives her some vague kind of hope, even if that's narrowing.]
Planes of existence? You mean like your version of the Fade?
no subject
In a way, yes. There are a couple different planes that are similar to the Fade as well as others. The Feywild, The Fey Courts that exist separate of that, the Ethereal plane which exists sort of layered on top of the Material plane and is often used for evasive or stealth magic techniques...
no subject
[Ellie carefully files away the existence of the Fey because yiiikes.]
The Ethereal plane sounds crazy. Can just mages get in there, or can other people learn to mess with that?
no subject
If you can get your hands on a spell scroll, then absolutely - a person who doesn't use magic could go travel between and withinside it. Those spell scrolls usually require a lot of specific resources and time to make though, so they're quite rare.
no subject
no subject
You need to have learned the spell to make scrolls of them, and the ones that would allow travel to an alternate plane are beyond my current experience. I'm also not sure if they would work to travel to the Fade in the same way as traveling to the Ethereal Plane even if I did.
I could try making scrolls for some other spells I know though and we could see if they work?
no subject
What do you need? If we don't have it here, I could find it.
