SUMMARY: Riftwatch agents were dispatched to investigate a series of suspicious murders that happened in the wake of Venatori occupation of the town.
REPORT:
When we arrived, we were met with a whole town full of extremely tense people. Understandable, of course, considering the circumstnaces, but between the five of us we began to notice some strangeness in their responses to our questions, as well as absence of servants, elves in particular, apart from two attending to the mayor's affairs.NEXT STEPS: We left the basement as we found it, well-hidden and sealed. I believe the remnants of the rituals being performed there deserve further inspection. I would also recommend we do something to diminish the standing of this town, rather than let them continue on comfortably in prosperity.
Any questions about their missing servants was met with excuses and stories from the townsfolks of varying plausibility. The mayor eventually admitted to us that the Venatori had rounded up and taken away all the elves living in the town, while threatening anyone who might have interfered. He claimed to have been able to spare his own two servants, though their agreement with him was questionable. (One of the pair, Robert, was not a good liar.) The villagers unanimously agreed with the mayor's claims, it should also be noted.
But we didn't need to come to a conclusion ourselves, because Lisette and Robert tipped their hand. We tracked them into a hidden basement of the mayor's estate, where it seems the Venatori had been performing blood rituals for some time during their occupation of the town. You can draw your own conclusions as to what fate the town's elven servants met.
The mayor's account was partially true. He left out that he had been given a choice in who the Venatori would choose for their rituals, and with the support of the town, gave up their elven servants along with any posing objections.
Lisette and Robert made clear they intended to continue meting out justice for this atrocity until they ran out of townspeople. Our attempts to persuade them otherwise went nowhere, and they would not be satisfied by half-measures. As tempting as it was to leave them to their work, we didn't see a clear way to avoid other parties investigating and implicating ourselves in their crime, nor was it reasonable to believe Orlais would handle the situation with the nuance it deserved.
Lisette and Robert have been dealt with. The townspeople are more than happy to cover up what happened, and the Mayor is the only one who knew Lisette and Robert were the murderers. We have possession of his written confession, which is suitable to ensure his silence and cooperation in further endeavors.
