SUMMARY: Sixteen members of Riftwatch are kidnapped and murdered! (But not really.)

REPORT:

The missing agents were taken by mercenaries supervised by a Venatori mage and killed en route to Minrathous. The Nightingale's Tevinter contact reported that they staged an escape attempt that inadvertently resulted in mass fatalities. The surviving mercenaries reported the loss to Minrathous, and several were executed for their failure. She returned what she could safely acquire of their remains and belongings. The remains are not in a state that allows identification, but the likelihood of survival is too low to risk further losses.

The signs of resistance at the camp were minimal and not consistent with what I would expect from our people, even if they were taken by surprise. Baron Dehsaies was cooperative, gracious, and obviously hiding something. At the time there was hope of recovering them alive, so we didn't linger, but a return visit is recommended.

Our information indicates that the Venatori mage became an abomination during the escape attempt. The deaths primarily would have occurred by burning. It is not a good way to die. We did not want to provoke any unwarranted fear or misdirected outrage by announcing it publicly at the wrong time. Training combatants to kill enemy mages immediately rather than leave them wounded for any period of time could be beneficial in the future.
