This is a very clever little device, isn't it. How delightful to be able to hear your voices before I even see you, I feel I know so many of you already.

And so, my darlings, I have a question for you. Who do you obey? Who do you serve? I have such a fascination with these divisions and their heads. What a funny little organization we are, with power broken so many ways and no single body at the top. Who is the leader then?

[ The subtlest hint of a barely there laugh. Fun hypotheticals. ]

My expectation is that all division heads serve Riftwatch's greater purpose, and guide us in how we might do the same based upon our skill, and their oversight. If one should war with the other, then I think Riftwatch would cease to exist.

And then it's a matter of who did the best in winning your loyalty.

That, I think, is what is puzzling me. I've never had to consider the worth of loyalty, but my beloved was perfect. She held my leash and bid me to do her will for the sake of her vision.

[ Said with a casual sort of confidence and reverence, the way the particularly devoted might mention the Maker. ]

It's very difficult to find the appropriate master after her.

[ There's a pause, this time, because that's A Lot to take in. When he speaks, he doesn't sound taken aback so much as thoughtful. ]

What made her perfect?

What makes a sunset beautiful? What makes a poem move one to tears? She was everything. Catching a glimpse of her was like leaving a dark cold room and stepping into the most glorious of days.

That's both very little and very much to ask of someone to master you. Professionally, I mean.

You may need to settle for competence.

[ what is this "professionally" of which you speak. She sighs, a very put upon sound of someone who is being asked to do a monumental task. ]

That is what I was afraid of. What a bother. I suppose as long as I'm not left to languish. Forces does sound like such fun.

Well, I've killed some interesting things.

[ Is that fun? That sounds like it's fun. ]

There were strange beasts attacking the townsfolk of Cragfield. Snowmonsters, furred giants, something like that. I burned one with another mage.

Shades in ice caves, after that. And there are always demons harassing the countryside from where they fall from rifts.

Before I arrived, Riftwatch was entrenched in Nevarra City when it was overrun by the living dead and a skeletal dragon. I'm sure many among the division have good stories.

All delightful! I am quite looking forward to fighting demons from these rifts. I've only done it once, but it was such fun. They really are very unpredictable, aren't they?

They're not without their tells, after a while, even maddened.

How do you fight?

That's a rather difficult question. With my hands, mostly. I quite like knives.

[luaithre]

[ Well, that's at least a little unconventional. ]

I would advise against using your hands on demons.

Yes, the firey ones are rather difficult to handle, as it were.

[ she laughs softly at her own joke, a champagne giggle. ]

Oh, but you said you're a made, didn't you? Can you do those elemental spells?

How wonderful! You must come and play dodge with me, dear Marcus! I haven't played in ages and ages and I've so missed it so.

[ "Come and play" is not something he's been asked any time recently. ]
