I'm not actually walking across Ferelden again, because I'm not allowed to be in Ferelden, but if I were, you know, I think I would deserve some kind of medal. The Medal of Trudging. Awarded for walking clear across a country way too many times.

Anyway.

But think of the achievement! The solidarity that'd come with looking over at a mate and knowing you both made a bloody moron decision, but you did it together.

True. Is there no similar sense of solidarity that comes with the chilli sauce then?

Only time I drank chilli sauce with a mate was a competition, and we both wound up in the ER 'cause we were so sick. It was more like a joke that turned into a bitter rivalry that we pretended was a joke, but definitely wasn't.

I won though, is the main thing.

[That brief but definite pause on the other crystal is Newt being simultaneously impressed and intimidated.]

Congratulations?

I had a similar friendship, once. Not quite the bitter rivalry you describe, but someone certainly got hurt.

[Oops Newt might be getting a little real, here.]

( The sheer scale of her poor life choices is certainly intimidating. )

Yeah?

( Oh no, are both of them going to get real? She'd rather talk shit and be obnoxious. ) What happened? Or is it not the kinda thing to talk about with an audience?

( Given that, you know. Talking over people's shoulders. )

[They should definitely get together over drinks and compare poor life choices sometime; his own amount to such a number that could fill the Hufflepuff common room.

He definitely blushes and recalls how very public this conversation is before coming to a decision. For the time being, he would much prefer silliness and avoidance of discussing such real things. Psh. Feelings and other people, who needs them?]

Probably best to leave it for a rainy day, I think the expression goes. [Translation: Never, or, at the very least, for as long as he can avoid doing so.]

In the mean time, fish and chips or pork and rice?

Right you are.

( She detects the faint traces of evasion, but then again, she might just be projecting. Her two modes are "never talk about feelings, only be sarcastic" and "being emotional about everything all the time," and finding the healthy space between is rarely an option. Who needs healthy, anyway? Boring. Terrible, even. Unacceptable. )

Fish and chips! I don't eat pork.

Um, um um. Okay, uh, would you rather be able to interact with any animal without the risk of ever getting a dangerous dose of a toxin, or would you rather that no animals produced toxins?

( She pauses. Was that a stupid question? It's probably a stupid question, but she feels it's an important difference. )

Clearly the right choice. Nothing quite like fish and chips. I suppose they have fish plenty here [she can probably hear the grimace in his voice, remembering only too well the sheer amount of fish they'd been stuck with down in the crevasse] but not chips, I suspect, sadly.

Oh, that is a great question! Hmmm. I would never want to take away an animal's defense mechanism. So I feel as though I must go with the first option, interacting with animals without getting a dangerous dose of toxin.

Would you rather have a herd of kangaroos or a heard of koalas?
