Generally, an abomination can be recognized via head to toe deformity. They commonly look like they're covered in boils and have also been boiled alive. Those are the ones that will attack you indiscriminately. But if someone is more subtly possessed—particularly if they've agreed to it rather than been forcefully occupied—there may not be any outward sign.
