Suspecting from overheard complaints that Trask was not someone with whom he wanted to entangle himself, he's quietly been directing his focus toward Veil research and keeping his ear to the ground for a good opportunity to get his foot in the door with Baerendorf.

Perhaps it's his angling in that direction that's caught his new superior's attention. Or perhaps he's done something to merit reprimand, though for once he can't think of any trouble he's caused in recent memory.
