[This isn't exactly how he wanted his first message to go. He always pictured it'd be something fun or exciting, but apparently life had other ideas.]

So, um.

[And he's off to a crackin' good start.]

You know, I've had my share of vivid dreams that felt pretty real. But I don't think that's what's happened. I'm pretty sure I... well, either I actually went back home for a bit, or I remembered something that I didn't when I first got here. But it was all when I was sleeping, so I... [There's a nervous chuckle. He's not articulating this well, is he?] Sorry, this is probably confusing, but I'm twice as confused as I sound. I had a super vivid dream about home that felt real, and then when I woke up... it's like I had already known what had happened, I had just forgotten. It felt real, like an actual memory. Has that happened to anyone else before? Or am I just crazy?

[He wouldn't put it past himself, to be honest.]

I know what you mean. The same thing happened to me about a year ago. Memories of things you don't recall before, like you were there and did them but how could you? You were here.

Yeah! Yeah, that's exactly it! [At least it's not just him.] So it happened to you too?

About a year ago, yes. I felt like I suddenly had three years stuffed in my head, in one night, while I dreamed. Comes with a killer headache.

Oh, wow. Three years? And I thought my few weeks were bad...

Yeah, it was... a hell of a headache. But you definitely aren't alone either. I questioned if those memories were real, but I honestly think they are. I don't have an explanation or proof of it, but my gut says they're real. The emotions I have attached to all of them are to real, to deep.

Yeah, that's the other part of it. A... lot happened, stuff that, as crazy as it was, makes sense in my head. And everything I felt feels way too real.

[Wait,what.]

...dreams that aren't dreams, but new memories? Do I have that right? Huh. I didn't know that was a thing.

That's what it feels like. You know how after you wake up from a dream it gets kind of fuzzy after awhile? Like if you try to remember it? This isn't like that. It feels too real.

But you didn't actually go anywhere, right? It's not like a rift swallowed you up and spat you out again.

Uh... not that I know of? I mean, I'm not a heavy sleeper, so I think I would have noticed...

Can't say I'm the best for answering that one. Dwarves don't dream.

You... don't? At all? Why?

We can't. We sleep like the stone as they say. Can't connect to the Fade.

But I thought anyone with a soul goes there at night. Don't dwarves have them?

Who said anything about a soul? Where you getting that from? You'd best be careful with that or you'll go insulting the wrong people saying sodding things like that.

Er... from other people here? From what I understand, souls go to the Fade when people sleep and that's how they dream. Is... that not the case? [It's an honest question. Maybe he was lied to, or he misunderstood.]

So? Just because other people do doesn't mean we all do. Dwarves can't. Doesn't mean we stopped having souls.

[Hoo boy, he needs to get his foot out of his mouth.]

I didn't mean soulless as in the "you're all heartless bastards" variety. People in my world aren't even sure if souls are a real thing, or just made up in stories. But I'm sorry if I upset you. Maybe dwarves just have a different kind of soul?

Could be that we all have souls but some just don't enter the Fade when they sleep.

Uh, sure! ...anyway, [SUBJECT CHANGE TIME.] not sure this was really a dream anyway. I'm not the first person this has happened to either, apparently.

Kirk. He told me this happened to him, too, months ago. If it's happened to other rifters, no one's said.

Oh right. He's a Rifter too. So what happens? You go to sleep and then just remember something?

Seems like it. It's freaky.

[ with the sort of cautious politeness that implies skepticism, ]

[ what does he think makes it different from any other weird dream ]

It's... kind of hard to explain. You know how after you wake up from a dream, and you might remember it for a little while, but the details then get fuzzy and sometimes then you won't remember it at all? That didn't happen. It feels too real, like it was something I had just forgotten and I remembered.

[ she agrees, because she knows what he means, and it's simpler than saying anything true — ]

But to drift so, it requires time, no? How long ago did this take place? What manner of detail do you recall?

It's been almost two weeks.

[He's been sitting on this one for a little while. He kept hoping the feeling would go away, that he was overreacting. But it hasn't, and here he is.]

I can recall quite a bit. Did a lot of fighting, and I felt it. Pain, injuries, blood... kind of stuff that when it happens in a dream, you usually wake up. But I didn't. In my "dream", days passed.

[ a pause, the sounds of something tapping, ]

May I ask something of you? A small request.

[ the nature of this may bear closer examination. the broader reception of it is all-too-easy to anticipate. ]

Do not spread word of this outside the Inquisition. Regardless of its nature, this manner of activity easily fosters rumour. You will find little of it kind.

I won't, don't worry. I don't think anyone outside the Inquisition would believe me, let alone take it seriously or understand it.

The danger is that they would. You are aware, I am certain, of the Fade's connection to spirits.

[ a prettier phrase than 'demon'. not by much. ]

There remains substantial debate upon the nature of Rifted persons. At its most permissive, the court of public opinion will hold you similarly to a mage. At its least,

[ he can fill in that much. ]

Yeah, I've heard. Some people think we're demons, blah blah blah.

[He's been warned and has even been called as such.]

Those people rely upon my people. To maintain their calm is a process, one to which some will always seek quick solutions. Caution -- this is all that I ask. Caution, and perhaps that you speak with the Inquisition's researchers, should the phenomenon trouble you further.

Okay. [A pause, as he hadn't thought about reaching out further into the Inquisition about this, outside this crystal.] Anyone in particular, or just... find someone in the research division and go from there?

Warden Serra heads the investigation into the anchors, no? I would further recommend Monsieur Thranduil — he has been present with the Inquisition longer than most rifted; his perspective would be of value.

[He nods along - not that she can see it.]

I've been wondering who among the rifters has been here awhile. I haven't heard his name before, but I know it now. I'll talk to him, too, if he's willing. And Serra. Thank you ma'am.

[ she considers correcting — ser — the usual reflex,

lets it lie, this once. the boy sounds young, and he's been polite enough. ]

Are you sure it wasn't just an incredibly vivid dream and nothing more? Perhaps it was something you ate? Drank?

[Look, dreams, and their connection to the Fade and the Fade to magic... he just doesn't like any of that. So this is a bit disconcerting to hear about, even if it's probably nothing.]

I don't think so. All the stuff that happened took place of a bunch of days. And it's just... it's hard to describe, but it doesn't feel like a dream, you know?

Could it be possible you traveled into the Fade, somehow?

[His tone is one of someone suggesting the absolute worst case scenario. Being in the Fade is not a good thing. He knows it's linked to dreams and all of that but... this sounds especially troubling.]

Not sure how I would. Mages only can really do that, right? I'm not a mage. I mean, I just remember crawling into bed and conking out for the night, like always. [Though, as he thinks on it, he glances down at the shard in his hand.] Only thing I could think of is I opened a Rift somehow and hopped in, but you think someone would have noticed.

It's generally limited to mages... although it's often said that others can visit the Fade in dreams. Dwarves are one of the rare exceptions. Who knows about rifters? [Though that just adds more potential dangers, if that's the case.] A rift would have been noticed, beyond a doubt. There must be something else happening.

Another guy - a Rifter - said the same thing happened to him awhile ago, so it's not just me, at least. But it's definitely strange.

Very strange... possibly worrying, but I don't know enough about rifters and their connection to the Fade to know for certain. I'm not even sure if anyone does. It's something to watch out for, if it happens again.

I am certainly getting the impression we're learning as we go when it comes to these rifts and shards. Very much hoping this was a one time thing.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. There's too much that's still unknown at the moment... and it'll be difficult to uncover those answers. But... who knows, perhaps it was that, a one time thing.
