For many you're taken away from family and friends - often put there by them - and you cannot leave those walls, save perhaps those with rank and permission. You are watched around the clock by armored men and women who often expect you're going to do something wrong. And when the higher-ups think you're ready, you take a test. If you do not pass... the results can be deadly.
