[ Adelaide’s voice is even, if tired- but what else is new? Still this is a requirement for the next ritual and to that end, she must find some sort of acceptable truth from a variety of opinions. Sequestered in ‘her’ desk in the Library, full pot of coffee warmed to one side, sheaves of blank paper and bottles of fresh ink before her. To her right? Anders with a similar set up, papers, quills, ink- a kitten. To her left, Roul to take just as many notes. Prepared as they are ever going to be- she asks. ]

A few questions for the Inquisition:

What is a soul, truly? What fundamental differences are there between a mortal’s soul and the embodiment of a spirit? Is it the culmination of our thoughts and experiences, our emotions? Is it a combination of our self given purpose and our ambition?

A mortal might change their purpose, might grow and become more due to our experiences- most spirits do not. But what more than that? What sets one soul apart and makes it distinct from another? Can the same be said of similar spirits?

Answers need not be religious or academic- merely true. What do you believe to be the difference, what do you believe to be a soul?

Ways to separate a spirit from a person they are possessing. The usual solution is 'kill them' and I would like to find something better.

[ She huffs a soft laugh. ]

I do not think anyone can meet Varric and think he has no soul.

Oh. [That was... significantly more depressing than he'd been hoping.]

I... Does it really have something to do with a soul, at that point? Because aren't they... Isn't it like sharing a body?

The ritual I'm looking at now requires divining the true essence of a spirit and soul and dividing them, like boiling salt from water though a fair deal more complicated. In this particular instance, it does deal with the soul.

That sounds... complicated. And not exactly pleasant.

Is - is someone in trouble?

[fleurdesel]

Anders. I am attempting to find a cure. [ Attempt being the operative word. ] It's...going.

Anders is possessed? [There's a real note of sudden and violent concern to his voice. Look, he was in prison during all that fall out, and doesn't generally follow mage stuff, okay.]

Is - Is he okay? Does he need any help? Can I do anything?

He is as well as can be expected- we are working to fix this and...you've helped today, honestly. The ritual calls for truth and you gave yours. Another way is if you are ever injured, come to him for healing. The better able he is to fulfill his Spirit's Purpose, the easier life is on him.

[There's a pause, because he really wasn't expecting Adelaide to ever say he had ever helped anything, and a warm feeling fills his chest.]

Of course. I'll - I'll help in any way I can. I'm glad that I was useful a little, at least.

...Talk to him- the less isolated he feels, the less likely there will be an unfortunate incident. Keep him company if you can. If his eyes begin to glow and he becomes angry- send for me or a templar- but do send for me first.

Okay, I can do that. What - what does it mean if his eyes glow? Is that the - ah- [He hesitated before saying 'demon', and instead just trailed off, leaving it hanging in the air.]

It means Justice has stepped forward, so to speak. It is best to be wary when that happens. He means well but he...it can be distressing for others.
