You know, I feel it has been too long since I have had a chance to speak with many of you. That is the way when we are all working so much, no? The coming and going makes it so easy to work with people and never truly know them.

( Imagine her, if you will, reclined on a fainting couch, a glass of port lightly held in one hand, a cigarillo balanced between the fingers of the other, and wearing something appropriately luxurious. )

So, I am wondering, what does responsibility mean to you? More what you consider your responsibilities, than the offerings of a dictionary. Understanding one another is key, I hear.

I'm sure they have heard many reprimands before. It's not something I'll concern myself with - I've no need to scold them when they know they are in the wrong.

[ Imagine her sourness when she learns about what they've been up to. ]

My responsibility is to educate and treat. I am a doctor now, if you had not been told. I'm sure you know my mother is overjoyed. [ But, a laugh. ] And, of course, to have an evening or two for cousins, whenever they wish.

A doctor. ( There is a pause, as she considers ) Do you enjoy it?

Oh, I think cards would be wonderful. Do you think they'd entertain the idea?

[ She's not sure if they want to spend much in the way of time with her, but. ]

I enjoy it a great deal. It's more than I had hoped to have.

I never imagined that it might be a course I could pursue. [ Quietly - ] I imagined I would be married by now.

( A quiet sound, pensive. )

Do you wish to be married, yet?

It isn't something I considered. [ A gentle lie. ] No one has caught my interest.

No? ( Her tone turns teasing. ) I was locked in a tower for ten years. What's your excuse?

Have you met men?

Mmm. You make a very good point.

None have captured my interest and I refuse to settle needlessly.

Ah, I see.

Well, for me, romantically and sexually? Women are infinitely superior to men. ( Bluntly said, that. ) I look to marrying a man solely to secure an heir and strengthening my family, and so I consider it more a... business relationship. Securing a contract with someone whom I can work with for mutual benefit.

Perhaps this can be the same for you. Then both of you are free to pursue more indulgent pleasures, so long as you both fulfil the needs of the contract.

[ There's a brief moment of panic - sexually attracted to women - before Sidony breathes out a sharp noise. ]

I've scarcely been here a week. I think I have time to decide what road I wish to walk. [ It doesn't come out as sharp as she means it to sound; it's a touch panicked, if anything. ] My mother would be happier if I was wedded, but I have my practice to consider.

( She says it jovially, but— yikes, it true, by some measures. Thank the Maker she’s wealthy and flawless. )

If you listened to my mother you would think I was nearing forty with no marriage prospects.

Oh, she needn’t be so grim. If Commander Coupe can get engaged, anyone can.

I've not met Commander Coupe, but I am sure she is charming.

Very charming, yes, compared to say... a sack of manure.

Either way, I am not concerned about my marriageability. I'm not hideous nor am I particularly wanting for a mind. My mother will have to wait.
