THE HANGMAN'S PAPERS
Published for Riftwatch, in the Gallows of Kirkwall
Winter 9:48
STICK BISCUIT, Madame Wysteria de Foncé (née Poppell): a short primer on the rules of a game invented by Madame de Foncé, Lady Asgard, Monsieur de Foncé and Warden Ellis. Meant to be played on a frozen body of water while wearing skates, by two or more teams each with an even number of players. Each player should be armed with a broom, or rake, or stick-like implement, with which they are to strike a hard biscuit or flat stone and so move it about the ice into the opposing team's (or teams') goal(s). While simple on the surface level, there are a number of finicky technical rules—likely devised during an argument or while insisting why some point should or shouldn't count—which complicate the game nearly past the point of being playable.
CURE FOR LONELINESS, Anonymous: a short paragraph soliciting those of Riftwatch & Associates who might need the services of a matchmaker, whether for blind dates, a partner for a night, or friendship only. All those who wish to submit their names for consideration are encouraged to submit their names and information. Requests are due within the next week, and matches will be included in the next issue of the Hangman's Papers.
THEORIES ON CLEANSING FIRE, Anonymous: an essay examining various passages in the Chant which detail the cleansing power of fire. The essay ultimately spins a few theories that the Gates and the corruption of the Blight in them might respond positively to exposure to veilfire, particularly from inside the Crossroads.
"YOUR BETTERS", Bastien: "overheard" lyrics, set to the tune of a popular cheerful tavern song, which take a few mostly-true (names withheld to protect the poor etc.) stories of bad behavior of wealthy nobles or business owners, especially toward their servants and employees, and wrap them in cheeky rhymes. Not his rhymes, though, clearly. It's just what people are singing these days.
A CIPHER, Anonymous: 14-5-24-20 20-9-13-5: 18-5-22-5-18-19-5.
With instructions for submitting material for future publications.
